๐ A review of more than a dozen massage studies conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine concludes that massage therapy relieves depressionย and anxiety by affecting the body's biochemistry.
๐ In a series of studies including about 500 men, women, and children with depression or stress problems, researchers measured the stress hormone cortisol in participants before and immediately after massage and found that the therapy lowered levels by up to 53%. (Cortisol can drive up blood pressure and blood sugar levels and suppress the immune system.)
๐ ย A Massage research study by Field, et al., published in the International Journal of Neuroscience, demonstrates that after a massage therapy treatment, the parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated. Levels of stress hormones, including adrenaline, noradrenalin and cortisol are lowered, which leads to a decrease of stress, anxiety and feelings of overwhelm.
๐ Massage also increased serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters that help reduce depression, promote improved mood, increased vitality, and an overall feeling of well-being.
๐ Another hormone that is activated through skin-to-skin contact is oxytocin, the hormone responsible for bonding, creating trust and strengthening relationships.
