With more than 1 300 positive cases reported since February 2023, an outbreak of mumps has been confirmed in South Africa. Mumps, an acute viral infection caused by the rubulavirus, causes painful swelling of the parotid and/or salivary glands. While this is generally a mild childhood disease, mostly affecting children aged five to nine, anyone can become infected.

Protect your little ones through vaccination! Our Baby Wellness clinics* offer immunisations and additional vaccine administering of the MMR vaccine. Administered in two doses of a single injection, this shot offers protection against measles, mumps and rubella (German measles). The first dose is recommended at 12 to 15 months, and the second at 5 to 6 years. Both doses are needed to ensure full protection. HYPERTENSION: The silent killer

High blood pressure – also known as hypertension – increases your risk of cardiovascular diseases, heart attack and stroke. Because it may show no symptoms, this condition is often referred to as the “silent killer”. That’s why it is vital to measure blood pressure regularly, especially if you suffer from diabetes or obesity or have a family history of hypertension. A healthy blood pressure level is 120/80 mmHg or slightly lower.

LITTLE LOCALS: Understanding RSV 😷

Between 178 000 and 443 000 South African children under the age of five are infected with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) every year. This highly contagious virus, which causes infection of the lungs and respiratory tract, is most active during autumn and early winter. As it is spread by infected droplets produced by coughing, sneezing or kissing, you can protect your child by restricting people outside your household from having close contact with them and disinfecting objects that are frequently touched, such as doorknobs, mobile devices and toys.

A measles outbreak has been declared in all provinces except the Eastern Cape. A total of 5163 measles tests have been performed since October, 8, 2022; 844 (16%) of these tests were confirmed positive, and 838 originated in the outbreak-affected provinces, with 6 sporadic cases from the Eastern Cape. Please make sure your children have received their recommended dose of measles vaccine and visit the nearest health facility when you notice measles symptoms, which include a rash outbreak, high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes.
