Spring is here! The days are warmer, the trees are showing off new leaves... the grass is greener!

Drowning already took a life this week in the Freestate... 😟🙁😥

The one emergency that is devestating to ANY person, is drowning due to increased water activities. 😢

Here are some tips for Summertime:

To prevent drowning,
🏊‍♂️supervise children closely (within arm's reach),
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒don't swim alone,
🚫never drink alcohol before or during swimming,
❤️and learn CPR.

✔️For home pools, install four-sided fences with self-closing gates and keep the pool area clear of toys.
✔️When in natural water, be aware of cold, wind, and currents, and consider wearing a life jacket.

Key Drowning Prevention Tips
1️⃣Vigilant Supervision:
When children are in or near water, a designated adult must actively watch them without distraction, keeping them within arm's reach.
2️⃣Buddy System:
Never swim alone; always have a companion who can provide help or call for assistance in an emergency.
3️⃣Avoid Alcohol:
Never drink alcohol before or during swimming, and never allow a supervising adult to drink while responsible for young children in the water.
4️⃣Learn CPR:❤️
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) can help save a life.
5️⃣Bright Swimsuits:
Use brightly colored swimsuits for children so they are easier to spot in the water.

Specific Summer Risks
🔷️Natural Bodies of Water:
Drownings are more frequent in lakes, rivers, and oceans during the summer due to increased use and varying conditions like currents and visibility.

🔷️Home Pool Safety:
Ensure your home pool has a four-foot-tall fence with a self-closing and self-latching gate to prevent unsupervised access by children.
🔷️Tubs and Buckets:
Regularly empty and store buckets, tubs, and kiddie pools upside down to prevent young children from drowning in small amounts of water.

Understanding the Danger
❗️Silent Incident:
Drowning is often silent and quick, not a noisy, dramatic event as depicted in movies.

Performing incorrect CPR will do more harm than good... and what you see on movies is not always correct.

Learn how to do CPR correctly - book your First Aid Course at MCG Training .

Can you afford not being OHS Act Compliant?

Failure to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act in South Africa can result in
❌️severe legal repercussions,
❌️including significant fines,
❌️administrative penalties,
❌️criminal charges, and
❌️imprisonment for negligence that leads to serious harm or fatalities.
Beyond financial and criminal liabilities, non-compliance can also lead to
❗️compensation claims from affected employees,
❗️reputational damage that impacts customer and investor confidence, and the
❗️potential closure of the business itself.

1️⃣Fines and Penalties:
Department of Labour inspectors can impose heavy fines, which can range from thousands to millions of Rands, depending on the severity of the infraction. They can also issue contravention, improvement, or prohibition notices.
2️⃣Criminal Charges:
In cases of serious injury or death due to gross negligence or wilful disregard for safety, employers can face criminal charges. This can result in imprisonment and a criminal record.
3️⃣Compensation Claims:
Employees who suffer injuries or illnesses due to non-compliance may pursue legal action, leading to significant compensation payments for medical expenses, loss of income, and disability benefits.
Operational & Reputational Damage
4️⃣Business Closure:
Inspectors have the authority to order the stoppage of work or the closure of premises if non-compliance poses a significant safety risk.
5️⃣Reputational Harm:
Negative publicity from workplace accidents can erode public trust, damage customer loyalty, and deter investors, which can be more devastating and long-lasting than financial penalties.
6️⃣Loss of Business Opportunities:
A poor safety record can lead to loss of business opportunities and a significant decrease in market value.
7️⃣Increased Costs:
Non-compliance can lead to increased insurance premiums and the need for extensive and costly rectifications of safety issues.
8️⃣Loss of Productivity:
Avoidable accidents and incidents stemming from non-compliance can lead to disruptions, loss of production, and increased absenteeism.
9️⃣Management and Executive Liability:
The OHS Act holds both employers and their management accountable. CEOs and company executives can be held personally liable, and their commitment to OHS is crucial for risk management.

Is your workplace healthy?
☢️An unhealthy work environment is a workplace with high levels of stress, negative behaviors like bullying and discrimination, poor communication, and a lack of respect or appreciation, which negatively impacts employees' mental and physical health and can lead to high turnover and low morale.
☢️Common signs include bullying, micromanagement, excessive gossip, high employee turnover, fear of speaking up, and a constant sense of negativity.

Characteristics of an Unhealthy Work Environment

4️⃣Negative Communication:
Widespread gossip, poor communication channels, and passive-aggressive behavior create division and hinder collaboration.
5️⃣Unreasonable Expectations:
Excessive workloads, unrealistic demands, and a lack of work-life balance lead to burnout.
6️⃣Harassment and Discrimination:
Experiences of bullying, microaggressions, discrimination, or other unethical behaviors.
7️⃣High Turnover:
Employees leave the organization frequently, often due to the toxic conditions.

Impact on Employees
🔴Mental Health Issues: Increased stress, anxiety, depression, and a lack of confidence.
