EDUCATING OUR YOUTH!

I was invited to a career day for the grade 7s at Port Shepstone Senior Primary.

What a wonderful school, lovely teachers, and an enthusiastic group of teenagers!

It was an absolute delight educating the children on what chiropractic is, and what is required should this be a career they are interested in.

Thank you PSSP for your friendly hospitality!!

Going "nuts" for your spinal health! Nuts can be a great source of nutrition for your spine. Here are some quick nutritional facts:

1. Walnuts - Rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which help protect the discs, nerves and improve blood flow.

2. Almonds - Rich in vitamin E and magnesium, which help support nerve and muscle function.

3. Pistachios - Rich in antioxidants, which helps improve blood vessel health around the spine

4. Hazelnuts - Rich in vitamin E, which helps combat chronic inflammation.

And last but not least... Our local favourite:

5. Macadamia nuts - Highest in monosaturated fats {Eg. omega 7 and 9), which reduces inflammation of the spinal and skeletal joints and improve nerve health

The comrades is around the corner!!

Some quick tips to finish strong:

1. Stay hydrated!

2. Get enough rest this week!

2. No new gear = race in the shoes you've
trained in!

3. Downhill discipline (ie bothas hill and fields hill) = pace yourself by running with a shorter stride. Your quads will thank you later in the race!

😁 Finally, trust your training!!! You've done the work, now run and enjoy the experience!!

Good luck to all the runners this weekend!!

Have you recently had an injury to your knee? Is it necessary to get an x-ray?

Health care providers use the ottawa guideline to help decide whether or not an x-ray is required:

1. Over the age of 55
2. Pain only over the knee cap (patella)
3. Tenderness at the fibula head
4. Unable to bend the knee past 90 degrees
5. Unable to weight bear on the injured knee

If you have sustained an injury to the knee, please see your health care provider as you may require an x-ray series.

Chiropractors are one of the health care providers who can send for x-rays, when and if needed.

You don’t have to go large to feel big changes.

The stationary lists are out, and parents are already planning for 2025. When buying a school bag, here are some tips to take into consideration:

1. When buying a bag with straps, ensure they are padded and wider:

This helps with the distribution of the weight of the bag on the shoulders.

2. A waist strap:

This helps keep the weight of the bag closer to the torso.

3. Is the back of the bag padded, and are the straps adjustable:

If the straps are adjustable, ensure that the straps are not adjusted too tightly, as this may cut into the armpit. The padding at the back of the bag, protects the spine from hard contents inside the bag.

4. Bags with wheels are helpful when the bag weighs more than 10 percent of the child's body weight.

5. Choosing an ergonomic bag helps protect the developing spine. We can pack them well too:

Place heavier items in the back compartments, and lighter objects in the front.

Did you know, that migraines affect 15% of the population? According to the World Health Organization, migraines are the most prevalent, disabling and long-term neurological condition, especially when factoring in years lost due to disability.

Migraines remain challenging as they are not a static disorder but rather evolve and change over time, thus being labelled as an “evolutive” chronic condition.

Let's take a closer look at puzzle building:

We are going into winter, where in door activities increase. One of the indoor activities is building puzzles. Sometimes we can lean right over a puzzle for a prolonged period of time, which can cause neck or back pain.

The benefits of puzzle building are:

* It improves short-term memory

* Fine motor skills in children

* Problem-solving skills

* Improves mental speed

* a form of relaxation

Some tips to protect the neck and back while puzzle building:

* Sitting incorrectly for long periods can cause pain. Consider choosing an ergonomic chair when setting out to build a large puzzle

* Take frequent breaks to walk around.

* Stretching the neck and back to decrease muscle stiffness
