The following is an audio simulation of auditory processing disorder created by Sound Skills, a clinic in New Zealand specializing in assessment and treatment of auditory processing disorder.

Individuals with auditory processing disorder (APD) have normal hearing, but their ears and brain don’t fully coordinate, affecting the brain’s ability to recognize and interpret sound. This adversely affects understanding, especially in difficult listening situations such as when there is other distracting sound present. However, speech can also be difficult to understand even in quiet, ideal listening conditions. Speech sounds are often confused with those that sound similar, and speech seems fast, fragmented, and confusing. This makes it very difficult to understand and remember what was heard. This simulation demonstrates that even in a quiet room, it can be difficult to keep up with ongoing speech.
