Feeling BLOATED after consuming legumes and beans?😬

Plant-based diets are quite heavy in legumes and chickpeas are usually the star of the show.

If you consume mostly non-plant-based foods and have a plant-based meal ever so often, you might feel some digestive discomfort.

Here are a few reasons why & a few tips to relieve you from this bloat:

Remember to rinse your legumes under running water till all the bubbles are gone before consuming them.

With legumes, it's unfortunately not an all-or-nothing thing and you would want to ease into larger amounts of this food item.
For example add 1/4 cup of legumes to your meal for a week and then add 1/2 a cup of legumes and work your way up to the portion size desired.

Talking all things B12! 💊

Whats the DIFFERENCE between Methylcobalamin & Cyanocobalamin?

Methylcobalamin is the most bio-available form of vitamin B12 (most readily absorbed) & remains in the body for longer periods of time & at higher levels than Cyanocobalamin.

Please note: Cyanocobalamin is the form of B12 most used in supplements because it is the cheapest. Even though I present methylcobalamin as superior, both are great at proving nutritional valuable quantities of B12 to the boy.

Dosage and form recommended, is the Methylcobalamin form and dosage of up to 500mcg per day is sufficient.

BUT FIRST...☕

Is it healthy to have coffee & what's the deal here?

There are two separate camps regarding coffee lovers and coffee haters and I am here not to hurt anyone's feelings but to give you some clarity on the topic.

The main objective here is your long term health:

We don't want to be pushing up our cortisol levels higher during the day than they are supposed to be.
We live such busy, high-paced, high stressed lives and the truth is adding caffeine to the mix is not doing you or your adrenals any justice.
We are in a permanent fight or flight mode & adding coffee throughout the day does have an effect on our hormones and circadian rhythms.

BUT

If you have a manageable morning routine and are able to take things easy and have your 1 cup a day as your morning ritual, there are a few health benefits from coffee such as, boosting physical performance (hello early morning gym goers), coffee helps you stay alert and helps you tolerate other humans.

Moral of the story:
Coffee isn't a health drink and as a society, we should most definitely minimize the amount of caffeine we consume on a daily basis and opting for a decaffeinated coffee option is a good start.
Replacing your Caffeinated coffee with a decaf after Noon is the most optimal way to metaphorically have your morning coffee and drink it too.

Firstly - let's hope you are not drinking your dairy milk by the glass anymore, we have WAY better options than that these days!

Almond milk:
47% calcium

Dairy Milk:
38% calcium

5.2 g saturated fat

The hummus you had, made you feel SO BLOATED! 🤢

Let's look at why this could be happening:

✅The chickpeas used for the hummus weren't rinsed properly. Rinse your chickpeas under running water till all the bubbles are gone before using them to prevent bloat.

✅The amount that you consumed is more than your digestion is used to. Ease into larger amounts of beans & legumes as you need to adapt to breaking down & digesting this food item.

✅Your fiber intake just went through the roof and your gut bacteria are having a party, whereas you are not invited.

In the future try making your own hummus, whereas you rinse your chickpeas properly and if that's not possible, be aware of the amount you are having if you have experienced discomfort in the past.

How DAUNTING? 🍲

Planning meals for the ENTIRE family, that everyone enjoys & actually eats, can be tricky...

To give you some simple guidance regarding this, think "deconstructed meals".

When creating weekday dinners, I deconstruct what I had in mind to make and by doing that, I am able to please all food preferences and requirements without me going insane!

Quick example, making a deconstructed. "crowd-pleasing" vegetable pasta dinner:

☑️Boil your pasta of choice (separate the pasta for your toddler & add spices on top)
☑️In a pan, cook your vegetables, I love using a fresh stir-fry mix with soy sauce. Add spices & dressing of choice (place some aside for toddlers meal)
☑️Open and rinse a tin of chickpeas (place some aside for toddlers meal & add spice to taste)
☑️Combine the pasta to your pan, give it a mix and plate the vegetable pasta in separate bowls
☑️Chop an avocado & add on-top of pasta and keep a few pieces aside to add to the kiddo's meal.
☑️If need be, place your meat alternative or meat products on on-top of pasta

Take a deep breath, put on some music, open a bottle of cold bubbles, sit down and breath.

Celebrate the fact that you have made it this far (in life) - so, take 2 seconds to relax and chill...

Then, go make dinner, clean up, prep for the next day, pack away everything and get ready for the night time routine!
