You may have already seen the introduction of our new practice name: Drs Hugo, Bryer and Associates.

This change came about because Dr Katherine Bryer has joined me in practice, and it’s been a natural and exciting step forward.

At the heart of it, nothing has changed about what we believe in. Our mission remains simple: to ensure every woman feels supported, heard, and cared for at every step of her journey.

What has grown is our capacity to do exactly that, working together, sharing knowledge, and strengthening the continuity of care we provide.

We’re grateful to be on this journey with our patients and community. 🤍

Running, gym sessions, and everyday life can sometimes reveal a weak pelvic floor more than we’d like.

The good news? There are non-invasive ways to help strengthen those deep core muscles.

With the Emsella chair, you can stimulate and strengthen your pelvic floor without effort or discomfort. One session is often described as equivalent to doing thousands of Kegel exercises in a short period.

No downtime, just sitting and letting the technology do the work.

I’ve known since the age of 10 that I wanted to become a doctor.

As a Grade 4 pupil, I was one of the first to sign up for the first aid group, and from that moment, the path ahead felt clear. Medicine wasn’t just a career choice; it was a calling.

Today, as a gynaecologist and gynaecological oncologist in Somerset West, my passion lies in supporting women through some of the most challenging moments of their lives, especially when facing cancer.

For me, it’s about more than treatment. It’s about care, understanding, and walking the journey alongside each patient.

Every story matters. Every patient matters.

Gynaecological cancers affecting the cervix, uterus, ovaries, and other parts of the female reproductive system can sometimes develop quietly, without obvious early symptoms.

That’s why awareness matters.

Pay attention to persistent changes such as:
• Unusual vaginal bleeding
• Ongoing pelvic or abdominal pain
• Bloating that doesn’t settle
• Changes in bladder or bowel habits
• Unexplained fatigue or weight loss

These symptoms don’t always mean cancer, but they should never be ignored if they persist.

Early detection saves lives. Trust your body. Get checked.

As a gynaecologist and gynaecological oncologist in Somerset West, I see every day how early action changes outcomes.

Every patient deserves to feel heard, supported, and respected in their well-being. 💙

I had the honour of presenting a talk at La Pineta in March on the benefits of the HPV vaccine 🌸

Sharing knowledge with our local general practitioners about HPV vaccination was truly exciting. The worldwide prospect of eradicating cervical cancer in the next 100 years is amazing, and it’s inspiring to be part of the movement to eliminate HPV and related cancers here in South Africa.

Every step we take towards education, prevention, and vaccination brings us closer to a future where cervical cancer is no longer a threat.

Let’s continue spreading awareness and protecting our communities!

Gynaecological cancers, including ovarian, cervical, and uterine cancer, can sometimes develop quietly, with symptoms that are easy to overlook. Changes such as unusual bleeding, persistent pelvic pain, bloating, or discomfort should never be ignored.

Regular check-ups and paying attention to your body can play an important role in early detection and better outcomes. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s always worth having it checked.

Your health is worth prioritising. 💙

Exciting times at our practice!

Dr Katherine Bryer has recently joined me, and I am thrilled to be mentoring her as she begins her journey with us. Together, we will always operate side by side, combining our experience, passion, and commitment to women’s health to provide care that is compassionate, personalised, and expert.

Dr Bryer is planning to start her fellowship in Gynaecological Oncology next year. I am excited to see where her career will lead and look forward to assisting and guiding her as her mentor on this incredible journey. Her dedication and gentle approach will undoubtedly make a meaningful difference in her patients' lives.

Your body often gives small signals when something isn’t quite right - unusual pain, changes in your cycle, or discomfort that simply doesn’t feel normal. Too often, women dismiss these signs or put their own health last.

Taking the time to listen to your body and seeking advice when something feels off is one of the most important steps you can take for your long-term wellbeing. Your health deserves attention and care.
