Taking part in oral motor activities helps to increase awareness, strength, co-ordination and movement for the mouth, jaw, tongue and lips.
Incorporate some of these blowing and sucking activities to help strengthen your child’s oral motor structures to support speech intelligibility.
Remember💡 this could never replace speech therapy, but is a good add on to help strentghen their oral muscles!

Early intervention is crucial.
Problems tend to escalate if not treated, which then requires more intensive and costly solutions as time passes.
Early intervention can prevent minor issues from becoming major crises, potentially saving significant costs in the long run.

“early intervention aims to prevent delays from worsening and supports children to keep up with their peers. Dealing with developmental concerns early gives children the best possible chance of reaching their potential.” ~activeability

Please contact Et Al Therapy if you have any concerns regarding your child’s motor, social emotional, communication, movement or socialisation skills. We are here to help!

Stay curious. Talk to your teens!
You don’t need to speak Gen Z.
Just be aware and open to listen.

Looking for ideas to make literacy tasks more fun and rewarding?

Get some plastic eggs and fill it with pictures (that are on your child’s level/ words from their school work).

Talk about the following:
- what sound do you hear in the beginning, middle and end of the word?
- blending: what word do you hear, if I say “c-a-t”?
- analysis: what are the sounds in “cat”?
- now pair the sounds with the letters - have them spell it/ write it

Let us know what you think!

Speech Therapy: FUN Language stimulation activity.
Kids love this activity as it uses physical items that they can play with afterwards!
Anyone can do this with any objects or toys that you might have at home. Focus on expanding your child’s language and focus on the following techniques:
1. Labelling items
2. Describing things (and have your child guess)
3. Expanding on their utterances
4. Encourage reasoning
5. Ask questions; to help them make inferences
6. Sentence completion (start the sentence and have them complete it; remember to provide pauses)

Go grab your container and fill it with objects and toys to expand your child’s vocabulary!
Let us know what you think of the activity and how it went!

As we celebrate Global Move for Health Day on the 10th of May, Et Al joins this global movement towards promoting physical activity for improved health and well-being of our children. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of movement in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Regular movement isn’t just about keeping children physically fit and healthy, but it is a cornerstone for their emotional, cognitive and social development.

Our speech therapists attented the anual Carel du Toit Hearing conference on 11 April. What an insightful day it was! We had the opportunity to listen to and engage with various speakers on the topic of hearing loss in children, which will better equip us in providing speech therapy to our paediatric population. It’s a pleasure to work with this group of ladies and to ensure that we continue to provide evidence-based practice!

Welcome to Et Al Therapy and Learning Centre Somerset West

The Et Al Therapy and Learning Centre in Somerset West was founded in 2004 by an occupational therapist, psychologist, remedial teacher and speech therapist, with the aim to provide high quality therapeutic services to families with an inter-disciplinary approach at affordable rates. These services include individual and group therapies, counselling, school visits, support groups, training of parents, teachers and significant others.

Since then, the ADHD support group, Senecio as well as Vergezicht private school came to their existence at Et Al Therapy Centre Somerset West. All of these are now organizations functioning independently within the Helderberg area. Our team at Et Al Therapy and Learning Centre has expanded to a group of 11 therapists and a remedial teacher, who presently form a multi-disciplinary team to support parents, teachers, schools and the child as a whole.
