When social workers are involved early in your serious illness journey, they have time to understand your situation fully.
-They learn about your family dynamics.
-They identify stress points before they become crises.
-They support final wish management planning.
-They help you make informed decisions with clarity.

Early involvement leads to a stronger overall palliative care experience.

Do not wait for things to become overwhelming: https://helderberghospice.org.za/how-we-can-help-you

On the 10th of March we had the privilege of hosting our annual Volunteer Appreciation Tea.

Our volunteers are an essential extension of our hospice team. From patient support to fundraising events, from charity shops to administrative assistance, their contribution strengthens every aspect of our service.

Hospice and palliative care is not delivered by professionals alone. It is sustained by a community.

To every volunteer who gives their time and skill so generously, thank you! Your impact is real and deeply valued.

If you would like to volunteer with Helderberg Hospice, we would love to hear from you: http://helderberghospice.org.za/volunteer

Today we recognise World TB Day.

Tuberculosis remains a serious health challenge in South Africa. While treatment focuses on curing the infection, many patients experience significant physical symptoms, emotional strain, and social challenges during their illness journey.

Palliative care can play an important role alongside medical treatment. Early involvement helps with:

-Symptom management
-Emotional and family support
-Practical guidance during recovery
-Coordination of care when complications arise

Palliative care is not only for cancer or end of life care. It supports quality of life during serious illness, including TB.

Earlier support leads to better overall outcomes and a stronger experience for patients and families.

If you or a loved one are navigating a serious illness, speak to your healthcare provider about early palliative referral.

Hospice is often misunderstood...

-It is not only for the final stage of serious illness.
-It is not about withdrawing care.
-It is not about losing hope.

Hospice and palliative care focus on symptom control, emotional support, and helping families navigate complex decisions with confidence.

The earlier we are involved, the greater the impact. That is the difference professional palliative care makes.

Today we recognise our dedicated hospice and palliative care social workers. They guide families through uncertainty; they support early intervention; they strengthen symptom management planning and protect dignity at every stage of serious illness.

Tomorrow evening (18 March 2026) you can support their work by joining us at our Spur Waterstone Fundraiser. Every meal enjoyed will help sustain psychosocial support services for patients and families in our community.

Thank you to our social work team for the professional, steady, and compassionate care they provide!

What does a hospice and palliative care social worker actually do?

Far more than people realise:
-They assist with advance care planning.
-They help families navigate diagnosis and decision making.
-They provide counselling and crisis intervention.
-They connect patients to practical community resources.

Earlier intervention means better symptom control and a better overall experience for patients and families.
