Every year, the first Sunday of June is dedicated to celebrating the hope and life of survivors of cancer.

On this day, survivors of cancer gather together with their families to celebrate their lives, to bring awareness to this disease, and to serve as inspiration to anyone battling cancer.

As Biokineticists we care for the well-being of every cancer patient.
Raising awareness associated with cause, prevention, and early detection remains the most effective means to battle this disease.

Biokineticists, through exercise, focus to get cancer patients to become active and get them back to their normal activities as soon as possible and increase their quality of life.

Together we can overcome. Contact a Biokineticist near you for advice on how to best become active and stay active during and after cancer treatment.

In this month we are taking a deeper look at chronic immunological and neurological diseases and today we educate about Multiple Sclerosis (MS):

MS is a disease in which an individual’s immune system degenerates the protective covering of its nerves.

Common symptoms:
Muscle Weakness, poor balance and Co-ordination, fatigue, muscle stiffness.

How can Biokinetics help:
Although it may be daunting, some studies show that the benefits of exercise far out way the challenges.

Exercises need to be:
• Minimum 3 x week
• Minimum 30 minutes
• Individual specific
• Intensity should be low to moderate

Benefits of Biokinetics:
These exercise specialists can monitor your breathing, heart rate and training load to prevent you from over-exertion.

Individually targeted exercises that can improve aerobic capacity, balance, flexibility, strength, as well as bladder and bowel control. Exercise has also been shown to improve psychological wellness in these patients.

Hypertension is a serious medical condition in which the force of the blood against the blood vessels and heart are too high.

Hypertension significantly increase one’s risk for developing heart and kidney diseases as well as a stroke.

Hypertension is diagnosed when a person has a systolic blood pressure of ≥ 140 mmHg and/ a diastolic blood pressure of ≥ 90 mmHg measured on two different days.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY is important in the prevention and management of hypertension by addressing certain risk factors like overweight, obesity and physical inactivity.

Regular physical activity makes the heart stronger, enabling it to pump more blood with less effort – the force of the blood on the blood vessels therefore decreases and lower the blood pressure. It also lowers your cholesterol and weight which is beneficial in treatment of Hypertension.

Biokineticists can:
* Help you to plan your exercise program properly without adding additional strain on your heart.
* Help you to detect changes in your blood pressure leading to early diagnosis and treatment
* Regularly check your blood pressure prior to, during and after exercise to ensure safe exercise participation
* Help you with the correct breathing techniques to avoid increases in blood pressure during resistance exercises
* Help you to choose the appropriate weight for resistance exercises and the correct intensity for aerobic exercises
* Detect adverse signs and symptoms that requires exercise to be stopped and medical intervention to take place

Biokineticists are trained to treat special population groups with exercise and movement.

But what is a special population group? If you or someone you know has an injury, condition, or struggle that prevents or restricts their movement and activity in life – that would be a ‘special population’. Some of the special population groups that can benefit from specialised biokinetics treatment include children.

As exercise specialists, Biokineticists can monitor and adapt exercise to be useful for each case and improve strength and function for quality of life at any developmental age.

Biokinetics and Neurology:
While it was previously believed that the adult nervous system is static, rigid and unalterable, researchers began to discover growth and reorganization of neurons in the adult central nervous system following neural injury such as stroke. Biokineticists can aid in the recovery of function following neural injury or pathology. In fact Parkinson's disease progression, as an example, has been re****ed and functional capacity improved in those who started with appropriate rehabilitation in the early stages of disease. Biokinetics guided rehabilitation will help with the recovery of function, prognosis of neural conditions as well as prevention of secondary complications arising from physical inactivity.

Please join us at our free live event this Tuesday 7pm on Global Move for Health Day, featuring panel discussion including Biokineticist Justin Jeffery who has a keen interest in Neurological Rehabilitation. Register here on www.biosaletsmove.co.za
