Why Your Body Must Release Before It Can Relax
Before you can take a truly deep, settling breath, your body often needs something more fundamental to discharge the survival energy driving your fight-or-flight response.

When adrenaline and cortisol surge, the nervous system shifts into protection mode. Muscles tense, breathing becomes shallow, and the brain prioritises safety over reflection. In this state, “just sit still and calm down” isn’t only unhelpful it’s biologically unrealistic.

When adrenaline is high, the prefrontal cortex (your rational, regulating brain) goes partly offline. Your body is wired to move, shake, and mobilise.

This is why trauma-release exercises and somatic practices can be so powerful: they help the body complete the stress cycle, releasing trapped energy instead of storing it.

Only after this discharge can the parasympathetic nervous system your rest-and-digest state begin to settle your breath and restore a sense of control.

Asking someone in a heightened state to concentrate, stay still, or “breathe deeply” often backfires. Stillness can feel threatening to a system primed to react.

Movement-based trauma release offers a safe pathway toward regulation by meeting the body where it is, rather than where we think it should be.

This is also why facilitated sessions matter, especially at the beginning. Working with a trained practitioner for around six guided sessions helps you understand your body’s signals, learn safe boundaries, and build confidence in the process.

Facilitation ensures you don’t push too hard, bypass sensations, or activate more than you can handle. Once your nervous system has learned the pattern of release and repair, practicing on your own becomes not only easier, but far more effective.

Fascia & the Trauma Release Process

Fascia is the body’s connective tissue web thin, strong, and everywhere. It wraps muscles, organs, and nerves, holding everything in relationship.

But fascia doesn’t just store physical tension. It also holds emotional and neurological imprints, especially after stress or trauma.

When we experience overwhelm, the nervous system often freezes or braces. Fascia adapts by tightening, thickening, or losing glide. Over time, this can show up as chronic pain, stiffness, fatigue, or a sense of being “stuck.”

Trauma release isn’t about forcing anything open. It’s about safety, slow sensation, and nervous system regulation. Gentle movement, breath, vibration, sound, and mindful touch help fascia rehydrate and soften.

As it releases, emotions, memories, or spontaneous movements may arise signs the body is completing unfinished stress responses.

Healing happens when the body feels safe enough to let go. Fascia listens. When we slow down, it responds.
