Tonsils are lumps of tissue on both sides of the back of the throat that help the immune system protect the body from infections. Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, two oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of the throat — one tonsil on each side.

Tonsillitis is usually caused by a viral infection but can be from a bacterial infection.
Symptoms include sore throat, difficulty swallowing and tender lymph nodes.
Treatment can range from home-care remedies to surgical removal. Symptoms will usually go away after 3 to 4 days. Tonsillitis is not contagious.

Tonsillitis can be painful, if the pain is severe and not relieved by over-the-counter pain medication, it may require emergency medical attention. High fever: A high fever (over 37 degrees Celcius) can be a sign of a bacterial infection, which can lead to complications such as sepsis.

A tonsillectomy is surgery to remove the tonsils.. Tonsillectomy (tahn-suh-LEK-tuh-mee) is one of the most common surgeries kids and teens get. The procedure is performed by an ENT Surgeon and does not require overnight stay.
