Grace Hughes Physiotherapy

Grace Hughes Physiotherapy Excellent, effective, evidence-based physiotherapy to ensure correct diagnosis, successful and efficient treatment of patients.

Grace Hughes’ practice focuses on REHABILITATION: neuromusculoskeletal, neurological (e.g. CP and stroke), sports, spinal and chest conditions are amongst the conditions we manage. Another division is medicolegal practice. Our physiotherapy services are often used by elite sports people and at international events, as well as within our community where we provide physiotherapy and training services to Siyakwazi (a local NGO supporting disabled community children and their families). Exposure to and interest in current international research ensures that the physiotherapists (Grace Hughes and Erin van Graan), are knowledgeable and up-to-date in their medical field. The practice strives to deliver evidence-based and effective physiotherapy to ensure correct diagnosis and efficient treatments, every time. Physiotherapy research over the last decade has revolutionised the way our patients are assessed and managed; we strive to care for each person sympathetically, professionally, and successfully. We also provide necessary information in order to understand injury or pathology, thereby facilitating the healing and rehabilitation process.

Your cartilage does not wear out from use.

It suffocates from stillness.

Cartilage has no blood supply of its own. It depends entirely on the compression and release of movement to push nutrients in and waste out. When that current stops, the tissue starves.

Think of a coral reef. It does not die from too much water flowing through it. It dies when the current stops and the environment stagnates.

Your joints are the same system. The problem is not that you have moved too much. For most people, the problem is inflammation in the surrounding environment, driven by metabolic factors that have nothing to do with the joint itself.

A rigorous review of more than 100 clinical trials found that exercise consistently improved pain, function, and quality of life in people with knee osteoarthritis. The pain relief was comparable to common anti-inflammatory medications.

As a physician: rest is not the prescription for a suffering joint. Strategic movement is.

What would you do differently if you knew staying still was the problem, not the solution?

Physiotherapy is not just about treating injuries.
It’s about helping people get their lives back.

Over the years, we've seen how pain affects everything — sleep, mood, confidence, daily life.

That’s why our approach is always:
holistic, rehabilitation-focused and tailored to the individual

Because no two bodies — or lives — are the same.

Thank you to every patient who trusts us with their recovery 💪💛

DID YOU KNOW?

Most pain is not caused by damage.

Pain is often your body’s way of saying:
“Something needs attention”
- not necessarily “something is broken.”

That’s why simply resting or medicating doesn’t solve the problem.

At Grace Hughes Physiotherapy, we look at the why behind your pain - not just the symptom.

What makes physiotherapy so unique?

Physiotherapy offers a powerful, drug-free approach to healing. While it can complement medical treatment, the focus is on movement, exercise, and hands-on care to address the root cause of pain and dysfunction.

At our practice, rehabilitation is at the heart of everything we do. We understand that the body works as a whole—rarely is just one system affected. That’s why we take a holistic neuromusculoskeletal approach to guide your recovery and help you regain strength, mobility, and confidence.
