Grace Hughes Physiotherapy

Grace Hughes Physiotherapy Excellent, effective, evidence-based physiotherapy to ensure correct diagnosis, successful and efficient treatment of patients.

Grace Hughes’ practice focuses on REHABILITATION: neuromusculoskeletal, neurological (e.g. CP and stroke), sports, spinal and chest conditions are amongst the conditions we manage. Another division is medicolegal practice. Our physiotherapy services are often used by elite sports people and at international events, as well as within our community where we provide physiotherapy and training services to Siyakwazi (a local NGO supporting disabled community children and their families). Exposure to and interest in current international research ensures that the physiotherapists (Grace Hughes and Erin van Graan), are knowledgeable and up-to-date in their medical field. The practice strives to deliver evidence-based and effective physiotherapy to ensure correct diagnosis and efficient treatments, every time. Physiotherapy research over the last decade has revolutionised the way our patients are assessed and managed; we strive to care for each person sympathetically, professionally, and successfully. We also provide necessary information in order to understand injury or pathology, thereby facilitating the healing and rehabilitation process.

Winter tips...

1. You’re stiffer in winter — and it’s not your imagination!
Cold weather can reduce blood flow to muscles and joints, making you feel tighter or achier. Gentle stretching in the morning helps warm things up.

2. Injuries increase in winter.
Slips, trips, and sprains are more common when it’s cold — even indoors. Proper footwear and staying active can help prevent falls and stiffness.

3. Cold muscles are more prone to injury.
That’s why warm-ups before any activity (even gardening) are essential in winter. A 5–10 minute dynamic warm-up can protect your joints and muscles.

4. Physiotherapy boosts circulation.
Certain hands-on techniques and guided movement help improve blood flow, which is often reduced in colder months — great for healing and overall comfort.

5. Arthritis pain gets worse in winter.
Lower temperatures and barometric pressure changes can increase joint pain. But regular physio-guided movement helps manage inflammation and stiffness.

6. Breathing exercises matter more than ever.
Winter is tough on lungs — from infections to asthma. Chest physiotherapy and deep breathing exercises can support lung function through the season.

7. We’re more sedentary in winter — and our spines feel it.
Sitting curled up on the couch feels great — but long hours of poor posture = neck and back pain. Your physio can teach winter-friendly mobility routines.

8. Physiotherapy helps beat the winter blues.
Movement boosts endorphins and circulation, helping combat fatigue and low mood common in shorter, colder days.

🫁 BREATHING MATTERS – CHEST PHYSIOTHERAPY SAVES LIVES

Chest conditions don’t just affect athletes — they impact children, older adults, and anyone recovering from pneumonia, bronchitis, COVID-19, surgery, or chronic respiratory diseases like asthma and COPD.

Whether you're struggling with shallow breathing, a persistent cough, or recovering from a hospital stay — chest physiotherapy can be a game-changer.

We use evidence-based techniques to:
💨 Mobilise and clear lung secretions
🫁 Improve oxygenation and breathing efficiency
🏥 Prevent lung infections and reduce hospital readmissions
🌬️ Support post-operative and recovery

Why it matters:
Unmanaged respiratory issues can lead to complications, fatigue, and decreased quality of life. Our team is trained to step in early and help you or your loved ones breathe easier, move better, and heal faster.

We work across all age groups and health stages — from young to frail elders, and even post-athletic events where breathing support is needed.

🧊❄️ Top 5 Physio Tips for Winter! 🧣🧘‍♂️
As the temperature drops, our bodies often feel the chill too — stiff joints, less movement, and more aches and pains.

👉 Follow along this week as we share 5 physiotherapy tips to help you stay active and healthy this winter!

2️⃣ Make Movement Part of Your Routine

🕒 When it’s cold and dark, it’s easy to skip exercise — but consistency is key for healthy joints and muscles!

💡 Tip: Schedule movement like a meeting. Even 10–15 minutes daily can improve mobility, boost mood, and reduce winter stiffness.

🏠 Try:

Morning stretches while the kettle boils

Lunchtime walks around the office or house

Evening mobility exercises while watching TV

📅 Small, regular movement = big long-term results!

Need help creating a winter-friendly routine? Your physiotherapist can help you build one that fits your lifestyle.
