🟥Some babies are born with birth defects, health conditions that happen while the baby is developing. We can’t prevent all birth defects, and most importantly, they are nobody’s fault.

🟥Most birth defects happen very early in pregnancy, often before you even know you’re pregnant. Nothing you did or didn’t do causes most birth defects.

🟥Regular antenatal visits, newborn check‑ups, and early childhood screening can help identify conditions early so babies get the care they need to thrive.

🟥Taking folic acid, avoiding alcohol and smoking, managing infections, and eating well can reduce some risks, but they cannot prevent all birth defects.

👶🏻Every child can learn, grow, and flourish with love, support, and access to care.

🧑🏼‍🍼Today, we honour all parents and caregivers raising children with special health needs.

Listen up, mommy! We know times are tough and jobs are scarce.

If you are not working or do not earn enough money every month to buy your baby clothes and other important items, you may qualify for the CHILD SUPPORT GRANT (CSG). If you do qualify, you can get the child support grant from when your baby is born.

You must get it as early as possible, as this will help support the baby’s development.

These are the things you need to bring when going to apply for a child support grant at your nearest SASSA centre:

🪪Your ID card
📃Your Child’s Birth Certificate. Remember, you must register your baby's birth before they turn one month old.
📄A police affidavit that states that you are unemployed or do not earn enough money.

Please remember that only the caregiver who stays with the child will be allowed to apply for the Child Support Grant.

Did you know that skin-to-skin contact from fathers can also have a positive impact on premature babies?

It helps regulate their breathing, heart rate, and temperature, and promotes bonding between father and baby. The whole family can play a part in providing support when caring for preterm babies.

This means when mommy is not around, fathers, partners and other family members can provide Kangaroo Care. Let's encourage all fathers and partners to practice skin-to-skin contact with their premature babies.
