The Gauteng Department of Health in partnership with is hosting a media breakfast to reflect on the digitisation of 800 000 patient records at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital & plans to expand the initiative to other hospitals.

The project replaces paper-based records with a secure, accessible & efficient digital system - transforming how patient information is stored & managed. This improves service delivery, strengthens data security and ensures compliance with privacy standards.

Beyond technology, the initiative has empowered 100 young people from local communities through skills development and employment- driving economic inclusion and ownership. These individuals will now become team leaders as the project is taken to other hospitals.

Over the next 36 months, we’re digitising at least 800 million patient records across all 37 Gauteng hospitals.

Specialised teams are already working at:
• Thelle Mogoerane
• Tembisa Tertiary
• Steve Biko Academic
• Sebokeng
• Tambo Memorial

Today, Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital CEO, Dr Nthabiseng Makgana, undertook a Gemba Walk at the Mortuary department, where we honour the end of life with dignity.

A Gemba Walk means going to “the real place” where care happens, to listen, observe and learn directly from those on the frontlines.

Dr Nthabiseng Makgana engaged with staff across roles, asking:
• What can we do better?
• What gets in your way?
• What do you need to serve our patients better?

These honest conversations are key to continuous improvement, accountability and excellence in reminding us that:
– Every life matters.
– Every area of the hospital matters.
– Every voice in the system matters.

We walk not just in title, but with purpose and presence.
