Pacing is a technique used to pass equipment or personnel between two vessels that are unable or do not wish to stop. Such circumstances could include a larger vessel that needs to maintain steerage, or weather conditions that are too significant to stop. When performed at the correct speed and heading, pacing can make the transfer of equipment or crew between two vessels more stable and safe than if stopped and alongside.

This is a high risk excercise that should only be perfomed by trained professionals with the appropriate vessel configuration and established communication. Please do not attempt to re-create any of the manoeuvres displayed in this video

Recently, our volunteers took on one of the most demanding courses on the NSRI calendar, the Swift Water Training weekend at the Breede River.

Led by Training Officer Dean Wegerle and supported by our training team, crews faced strong currents, unpredictable conditions and even a nighttime rescue exercise. The goal was simple but vital: to build the knowledge, skill and respect needed to work safely in powerful river environments.

Volunteers described the weekend as physically tough but deeply rewarding. They returned home stronger, more confident and united by the camaraderie that defines Sea Rescue. 💙

.🌊 55 years of service 🌊

In 1966, a young teenager stood on the shoreline, watching the SA Seafarer disaster unfold. That moment changed his life. It sparked a calling that would see Howard Godfrey dedicate more than half a century to saving lives at sea.

From crew member to station commander, mentor, and now Honorary Life Governor, Howard’s journey is proof that volunteering is more than duty; it becomes family.

Today, we celebrate 55 years of service, courage, and heart from this remarkable man. Thank you, Howard.

On Friday, 15 August, the NSRI hosted its 58th Annual Awards Evening and AGM at Lagoon Beach Hotel in Cape Town.
The evening paid tribute to our dedicated volunteers and courageous individuals who risk their lives to save others on South African waters.

Station 21's Marc May was awarded 25 years in Sea Rescue and thanked for his incredible service

We asked Marc if we could share what it means to him and these are his thoughts:
25 years as a volunteer with Sea Rescue station 21 . Can’t believe how time flies, my whole May clan have been with me every step of the way. I joined after being rescued and became crew , coxswain and then station commander.Daniel and Saskia were born into sea rescue and eventually qualified as crew , my wife has been the rock, station commander wife , qualified crew and training coxswain. I have done hectic rescues with all of them on separate occasions and they have been solid. Solid because of the training ,, and more training . Life changing for the family at times but nothing like family bonding on a rescue. I love my station for the friendship, support and training we have had and our lives have been moulded around the sea forever. Thank you NSRI all you volunteers rock .. it’s what we do

Well done and thank you to every crew member involved.
You make us proud!
