1. Have you ever been on a diet when things are going well and you are losing weight, the scale says so, your clothes are a little looser and you can feel it. You feel happy and proud of yourself and then a friend passes you a compliment “you’ve lost weight” they enthuse, “you are looking fantastic!” How do you respond?
A. Do you respond with grace and gratitude?
B. Do you accept the compliment gladly and even acknowledge that what they have said just happens to be true and accurate?
C. Do you grimace and say “thank you but I have a looooong way to go!”
D. Do you hesitate and say something to the effect of “but I am still so fat, nowhere near the size that I used to be.”?
2. Let’s say again – that you have been on a diet, things are going well and you have lost a considerable amount of weight. When you stand in front of the mirror what do you see?
A. Do you see your approving smile as you take note of your positive physical attributes?
B. A kind smile of acknowledgment that even with its imperfections, this body and face is yours and has done much for you and your loved ones, and you wouldn’t change it for the world?
C. A disapproving grimace, glaring back at you as it takes note of all your negatives – thighs are still too fat, belly too flabby, face too lined etc.
D. A sad expression that reflects the disappointment that this face and body is not what it should be or once was.
For both of the above questions:
If you answered A. or B. then well done and perhaps you are on the right track already, I applaud you and beg you to continue along that road. For now let’s call you guys the A group.
If you answered C. or D. then let me assure you of this…….. It’s not only your weight loss that has a looooong way to go! For now let’s call you guys the D group and you are the people that this book is aimed at.
I urge you to understand this;
· Even if you are currently on a “proven/approved/accredited by nutritionists, medical doctors and the world’s top scientists blaah, blaah, blaah” type weight-loss program or diet,
· even if you are feeling totally committed right now,
· No matter the courage that it has taken you to embark on your journey of weight-loss……
If you do not change your mind, then………….
You will fail.
Is there hope? Of course there is! The beauty of what you have just read is that it tells you that the power to succeed & achieve your weight loss goals and stay that way for the rest of your life........... Is in your own hands.
Today – as I stand – joyously wearing size 10 - 12 clothes, and whose most successful weight loss campaign ever started with a surprising shift In My mind rather than with What I Was eating, I can tell you this.
I am at peace with my body, in fact for the first time in 31 years – I actually like my body!
I live, run, cook and goof around with my family and our crazy dogs, heck I even play Frisbee on the beach with them all, I swim and play in the waves like a child – all those movements are done ecstatically with ease and without pain!
I know – without a shadow of doubt, that for the rest of my life, I will keep off all of those evicted layers of unwanted fat.
I know – without a shadow of doubt, that for the rest of my life, I will make intelligent, healthy choices – naturally, easily and even – habitually.
I enjoy and in fact relish every meal I eat and my exercise regime has become a natural and habitual part of my routine.
I like who I am to myself and to my loved ones and I love what I stand for.
It wasn’t always like that.
I have been on a brutal and treacherous campaign against my own body for many years. For a short time when I was very young – I became borderline anorexic in weight and fully anorexic in behaviour and mentality. (Note the use of the word borderline, it’s really hard for Fifo to get too thin)
I have been gorgeous, healthy, fit and trim – many times- for a short while each time.
I have been varying degrees of overweight to downright morbidly obese – many times – for longer periods and higher weights each time.
I have suffered with constant and agonizing pain from old back injuries that could not cope with the enormous weight of what my skeleton was trying to support.
I then suffered even more and battled to recover from more recent back injuries because my body was too weak, my muscles had no strength and my mind was exhausted from back pain already.
Although this 30 year war with myself and my own body has taught me a lot about nutrition, diets and exercise (believe me – I have tried them all) – let me make this clear right now……. I have not created a manual on what to eat or how to get fit. I am not a nutritionist, I am not a fitness professional.
What I am is a woman who has battled against herself and her weight for the past 30 years. What I am is someone who – eventually; mentally exhausted, physically broken, emotionally empty and deeply confused – decided to make a meaningful change.
What I am is a woman who has triumphed in this deeply personal battle.
Who I am now, is a woman full of hope.
I am full of hope that my enjoyable journey from
Obesity (over 100kg), Sickness, Pain, No Energy, Deteriorating health, 30 years of Yoyo dieting, Size 18 clothes were too tight, Feeling ugly,Depression, Disappointed with myself, Dismayed at a body that felt as if it was old already
