Es la Vida Animal Haven

Es la Vida Animal Haven Es la Vida is a private animal haven where we specialise in rehabilitating and rehoming or retiring a

A haven for animals who have faced hardship, where they can come back to balance and develop trust through the use of techniques that gain co-operation, not enforced compliance. The humans behind the haven are:
* Riana Olivier (Active member and Founder) - SABCAP registered advanced qualified animal behaviorist and trainer - dogs (Ethology Academy)
* Sammy Thompson (Active member and Co-Founder) - animal communicator with over 13 years experience; holistic animal wellness practitioner specialising in trauma release and emotional wellness; and energetic and vibrational healing therapist and teacher (including Usui Reiki)
* Sheryll Steyn (Partially Active member and Co-Founder) - qualified animal behaviorist and trainer - dogs (Friends of the Dog Academy), Shelter Animal Initiative Facilitator, animal communicator, Life Alignment Body Balance practioner specialising in animal energy healing and balancing, Animal Reiki practitioner, Zoopharmacognosy.
* Debra Pearce (Active member) - animal communicator and Reiki practitioner

Rescue animals can carry a host of behavioural issues with them, often brought about by unconscious human behaviours that lead to the animal losing trust or not being given the chance to develop trust in the first place. Es la Vida incorporates a variety of healing modalities and techniques in their rehabilitation programme, in addition to the physical behaviour modification tools and techniques. The modalities include:
- animal communication
- Reiki healing
- Tellington Touch
- Trauma release and emotion balancing therapies
- Vibrational and energetic healing therapies
The practice of these modalities gives the animals at Es la Vida the opportunity to be heard and helped to release any trauma or upset that has led to them losing trust. Through gentle respect and consideration, the animals are invited into a new form of interaction with humans; one of mutual trust, consideration, and respect. In return, the animals are invited to participate in the workshops and courses aimed at bringing humans back to an understanding of animals as wise and intelligent beings. As a self-funding animal haven, Es la Vida raises funds by offering the following events and services:
- Regular dog walks on the farm (5.5km dog walk), bring your own dog or walk with one of the canine residents (currently every second month)
- Puppy classes, aimed at teaching basic obedience
- Market days (fetes) celebrating all things animal
- Workshops in Reiki healing for animals
- Animal communication workshops
- Hosting of workshops, talks and courses by a variety of invited experts in their field… from canine obedience and training modalities to healing modalities and therapies that can be used with animals and for animals

The volunteers who offer their time to work with the animals on Es la Vida are currently working with the resident population of horses, donkeys and dogs. The free-roaming horses and donkeys are being gently re-habituated to human contact, and the dogs on the farm are in various stages of the canine rehabilitation programme, which is individually tailored to each dog’s particular needs. Es la Vida also offers its facilities currently to local animal rescue shelters
Future plans include the following:
- Rehabilitate and rehome more shelter dogs as and when facilities allow
- Offer a haven and sanctuary for the release of rescued animals such as tortoises, owls etc.
- Offer experience-focused “practice” days for new reiki practitioners and animal communicators to gain experience and develop skills
- Animal obedience and behaviour modification training
- Educating and raising awareness in underprivileged areas regarding animal needs and animal care

The main aim of Es la Vida is to bring humans and animals to a better understanding of each other; to offer a space for rescues to come back to balance, develop trust and either find their forever home or retire in peace; and to improve the lives of animals everywhere through education of humans and raising awareness.

Jan 2023 update on Lappies and Ciska.

Farm… to fur-niture… to farm again.

So much has happened in their lives since May 2022. In early May, Ciska was taken to the vet after an argument with a snake. We were blessed that there was no envenomation and she recovered well, though with the loss of sight in her left eye. Whilst at the vet, x-rays were requested and these revealed signs of spondylosis developing in her lower spine.

To help Cissy’s recuperation, and due to the spondylosis, Sammy relocated Lappies and Ciska to her home in Gansbaai. The house was not ideally suited to medium and large “farm” dogs, as there was only a small garden area for them, coupled with many indoor stairs, which is why Lappies and Ciska had lived at the haven, enjoying the freedom to run around off-lead and be dogs.

The transition to suburban life was quite a culture shock for Lappies and Ciska, with many new and unfamiliar situations they had to adjust to. Challenges such as learning how to walk in the streets on lead past a multitude of other dogs barking at them from behind gates; learning how to engage appropriately on-lead with other dogs walking in the street; learning how to cope with neighbourhood dogs barking; learning how not to chase the neighbourhood cats, bunny rabbits, francolin, mongoose that may suddenly dash across the road in front of them, or appear on the garden wall… from farm to furniture required a complete shift in reality and behaviour from them. They excelled and Lappies went from scary-new-dog-in-the-neighbourhood to being enthusiastically greeted and engaged with by the neighbourhood dogs and humans alike… he quickly understood what was required and brought his haven-ambassador-manners to socialising appropriately with all other dogs, on and off lead. He was great at managing potentially dangerous situations with other not-so-friendly dogs and I was often amazed at how he could stop another dog in its tracks at a distance, just through his posture and movements.

Ciska was more reactive, understandably, whilst recuperating from her traumatic experience, and much more protective of her space, but with a lot of decompression walks, positive re-inforcement training (not sure if she trained Sammy or if Sammy trained her, but she got loads of treats in the process!), trauma release and healing sessions, she quickly adjusted and became better able to regulate her emotional state with other dogs. She did not seem to have much experience with walking in the streets, and she required a totally different approach than what Lappies needed, (more confidence-building, positive association). She learned to trust that Sammy would look after her with any off-lead dog and after a few months was able to socialise quite well with many of the other off-lead neighbourhood dogs. So many wonderful and funny experiences were had in the process.

And just recently, Lappies and Ciska moved with Sammy and their human family to a cottage on a farm in the Overstrand area. Lappies and Ciska are now, once more, able to be farm dogs once again. They are adjusting really well, did extremely well through all the experiences related to moving (packing boxes, moving furniture, strangers in the home etc.), and now settling back into farm life . Lappies is so enjoying having a view out over “vlaktes”, but is not so keen on the cows nearby (he’s only been used to encountering horses and donkeys). Ciska is a mostly-indoor dog, preferring to snooze the day away on comfy bedding, and play with her stuffed toys and balls, though she really enjoys the daily walks across the fields and sticking her nose in molehills with Lappies… it’s wonderful to see them back in an environment that they love.

We're extending a warm haven welcome to our new haven hounds... Wollie, Luna and Bruno. We hope they will enjoy their time with all the other haven-beings.

Lappies and Ciska visited the haven recently and got to catch up on the smells and have a roam around the paddocks.

The human children might have been on school break but the four-pawed students at Es la Vida were business as usual. Blade and Misty loving the ability to run and play safely in the enclosed agility area, while learning how to return to their human and walk without pulling.
Little Guus, a beautiful Spaniel, has never seen horses and donkeys before and her human lovingly helps her navigate this new experience calmly 🐾💞🐴
Guus is an absolute natural through the agility arena and her human is well trained now too 🤣🤣

Lee is na my mening redelik "bom" proof, donderweer wil hy vang, skote beteken ondersoek instel ens.

In early May, our beautiful Ciska had an argument with a snake.
She spent three nights at the vet, and fortunately there was no need for anti-venom, but the damage she sustained to her face meant that she needed time to recover.
She's been in Gansbaai with Sammy since then, and is recovering well. She is blind in one eye now but is adjusting really well, and her recovery is going great.
As they have been together for 5 years, Lappies is with her as she recovers.
