What a great way to start the year! Timothy pushed through and managed to finish his vision therapy during the school holidays. Now that’s determination!
His mom used a couple of ways to motivate him like marshmallow rewards (who can resist?) and getting others to join him when he did the exercises. Well done to Team Scheepers.

This week, the Stellenbosch practice is being looked after by our amazing staff and colleague Zelda van Coller.
Meanwhile at Mercy Ships in Madagascar, we're still busy with cataract surgery. These three photographs tell the story of a young Malagasy girl who had congenital cataracts. She had cataract surgery in both eyes and now, she sees the world a whole lot clearer than before. And to top it all, she got those cute pink sunglasses and a teddy bear to take home.

What a privilege to working as part of the Eye Team on the Africa Mercy in Madagascar. Today was our paediatric day where we screened 28 young eye patients for possible surgery.

A recent research paper outlines new evidence for the influence of sleep on the risk of developing myopia (short sightedness). Children aged 4-6 who sleep less than 7 hours per night have a 25% higher risk of developing myopia. Kids need at least 10 hours of sleep and a consistent bed time, even over weekends.
I often see adults in the practice who struggle to see well when they haven't had sufficient sleep. With the colder weather upon us, rather go to bed early than spend time on your mobile device or watching TV. Sleep is vital for both adults' and children's wellbeing.
