The principal was upset. No one admitted responsibility.

Community Keepers addressed the suspected class calmly. “If it was you, and you trust me, come to me. I will stand beside you while you clean it. I am not here to judge you.”

Later, a nervous boy knocked on her door.
“It was me,” he confessed.

In the office, he explained softly, “Aunty, it’s because I can’t express my words in class.”

Suddenly, the vandalism was no longer defiance - it was a voice that felt unheard.

Together, they cleaned the wall. When the marks were gone, something greater had been restored: trust.

In both moments - the raised hand and the quiet confession - the message was the same. When children feel safe and heard, they grow. And when we choose compassion over condemnation, we build not only clean walls, but brave hearts.

Bomikazi Lupindo (PHD Candidate, Oxford University) trained 6 of our team members this week - they will be participating in the pilot phase of her research project, “Ties That Heal”, a trauma intervention.

“In South Africa, young people continue to face alarmingly high levels of violence in schools and communities; as seen in recent reports of severe bullying and school-based assaults.

My current DPhil research builds on this work; developing a school-integrated intervention that can be implemented across schools and afterschool programmes to reduce the effects of violence exposure and foster resilience and wellbeing among youth.

It’s time to transform how we support young people in violent contexts; not just to survive, but to heal and thrive.”

The sessions focused on understanding what grief is, finding ways to cope with it, and most importantly, creating a space where he could learn that it is okay not to be okay.

At the end of the therapeutic journey, he reflected on his growth using clay dough. After a few moments of quiet thought, he molded a flexed bicep. With a proud smile, he said it symbolized how much stronger he felt - not physically, but mentally and emotionally.

Sometimes, our learners have only ever known how to keep carrying what hurts. But in that moment - as he looked at his clay symbol of strength - he had learned something different. He had learned that healing is not about forgetting the weight, but about finding the strength to set it down.

A beautiful story from our team at Imboniselo Primary School in Paarl to end off term 1:

"As we close term 1, we joined hands with our school to celebrate the teaching journey of one of our foundation phase teachers who is going on retirement. She has been serving for 30 years. When she informed us that she will be retiring, we thought of doing something special for her and her class.

We did a "separation" group session with her class by providing support and preparing them psychologically for the change. At the end of the session, the learners did a beautiful thumbprint art to express their gratitude for the teacher. The thumbprint of each learner represents the impact she left on each one of them. The art is a gift to the teacher to keep as a memento. The beautiful memories she created with her learners will always be something they will cherish about their childhood.

It was heartwarming to be part of this moment."

A new year brings new learners ...

- who are unfamiliar with our services. Which is why we have a strong focus on destigmatisation and the promotion of help-seeking behaviour.

Our team at Forest Village Leadership Academy shared this story with us:

"During the “Introduction to CK” groups, the Grade R groups were very excited to meet us and see what the CK office looks like. They enjoyed the ice breaker about feelings and why they felt those emotions. Many of the learners said they enjoyed the video of “Inside Out” and were asking questions after the video. When they entered the therapy room, they were surprised and happy to see all the toys. We explained the purpose of the room and now they know that they can ask their parents or teacher to visit again when they are having a bad day."

Our team at Malibu High School shared this story with us:

"I was walking on the school grounds and observed children who had been CK clients in counselling. Learners who once struggled with social anxiety are confidently walking around and making new friends. Learners who once struggled with motivation are now motivated. Learners who once isolated themselves are now more confident.

One learner commented in a session, “Before I came to CK I was very broken. After each therapy session I picked up all the broken pieces and today I feel whole again".

It is a great feeling to hear them describe their own before and after counselling.”

Thank you Nation Builder, GBVF Response Fund1 and Capitec for funding our work at Malibu High School!

Today we partnered with the City of Cape Town waste management team, talking to the younger grades about keeping our environment clean and tidy. Our environment has an impact on our mental health and wellbeing.

Through song and dance, we all learnt the importance of keeping your environment clean and reducing waste by recycling waste material.

Thank you Bingo for visiting Petunia Primary today. The best way to learn is through play.

Did you know ...

A 2024 study by Heleen Hofmeyer on teacher preferences and job satisfaction in South Africa, revealed that half of all teachers had considered leaving the profession due to stress from managing learners’ psychosocial issues.

Teachers at our partner schools have access to individual support as well as professional development sessions that promote coping skills, motivation and sense of belonging 💛
