🍹Would you pay R663 for ingredients for a drink that CANNOT make breastmilk? 🍹

That's the total cost of buying all the ingredients needed for this recipe of "Jungle Juice", found on a Capetownian OBGYN's website. Similar recipes can be found on local hospital websites.
Recipes like these claim to help increase milk supply in the early days postpartum, but fail to recognize one crucial step in the breastmilk production process :

Building supply has nothing to do with what you eat, drink or medicate with 😁

👌🏻Even if you used absolutely no homeopathics, no medication, no juices or cookies or "lactation supplements", you can easily have enough breastmilk for your baby by following simple biology : the more milk removed from the breast, the more you will make. Baby frequently nursing in those first weeks is ALL it takes to make milk. There's really no secret! You don't need to do or take anything but feed your baby! Milk REMOVAL is what creates the supply. You empty the breast, and it fills up again.

The colostrum you started making during pregnancy is ready and enough for your baby, and you don't need medication or herbs to "speed up" the change from yellow colostrum to mature, white milk. This process is started when progestererone and estrogen falls after the placenta is delivered, not when you have a glass of jungle juice 😉.

"Hormones prepare the mammary gland during pregnancy by multiplying the ducts, alveoli, and other structures in preparation for lactation (Macias & Hinck, 2012). This contributes to an increase in breast size and breasts may feel fuller (Hale & Hartmann, 2017).

+

Effective and frequent removal of milk, by an infant or if needed by expression, will build and maintain milk production (Lawrence & Lawrence, 2016; Pollard, 2011). "

👉🏻The hormones and structures you need to make milk ALREADY EXISTS 😁 all you need to do is feed your baby!

Let's analyze recipes like these and why people believe they make or help with milk :

ROOIBOS TEA : rooibos is often a base for other "lactation teas" and mixtures. It doesn't offer any benefit other than hydration and the health properties of rooibos. There is no magical play on lactation hormones that happens with this herb.

WATER and REHIDRAT: You do need good hydration to function in general! Often after birth we forgot to drink during labour, and may be tired and in need of extra liquids. This can be fixed with good old water or if you wish, added electrolytes. Milk supply however does not solely rely on you needing to drink liters of extra liquids every day.

JUICE : Fruit juices offer no nutritional benefit other than the obvious (energy, vitamins) if they are fresh pressed and not reconstituted syrups with added sugar. The reccomended amount of fruit juice adults should consume a day is 120-240ml. This recipe uses double that.

BLACKTHORN BERRY ELIXIR : There is no scientific evidence to support this herb's supposed effects on lactation. Some other claims are that it supports "vitality" and energy levels. Milk production can take place even with low energy levels!

RESCUE REMEDY : According to Natura's website, "Natura Rescue is a homeopathic-flower essence combination which helps you cope with: Emotional Shock, Anticipatory nervousness, Grief and Sleeplessness from worry." Homeopathy is safe both in breastfeeding and pregnancy, and may provide relief for the mentioned conditions when used in correct dosages. But does it do anything to the lactation process? Nope. Oxytocin may flow better when you are calmer and more relaxed, but "being relaxed" doesn't simply create supply.

🌸Mothers deserve evidence based information on how breastfeeding and birth works. Perpetuating misinformation even with good intentions hurts mothers in the long run. You CAN trust your body to make milk for your baby.🌸

Hey Lactation Nerd - wanted to know why Polycystic O***y Syndrome has an effect on your milk supply?

The body relies on a number of hormones to facilitate lactation. Certain conditions may elevate or decrease these hormones, which has a knock-on effect on your ability to lactate, or not! Many people with PCOS successfully breastfeed their babies. Some may need extra support. If you're a mom to be and worried, chat to a Lactation Specialist on how to manage this condition. If you suspect PCOS may be the culprit behind your low milk supply, there are strategies that can help. 🌸

🤔It can be very stressful if your healthcare provider suddenly tells you to stop breastfeeding. Or to only put your baby on each breast for 10 mins. Or to refuse them night feeds, or give a formula top-up when their weight is perfectly fine on their curve.

Many moms are unnecessarily told to wean while they're taking certain medications, or to confirm allergies in the baby, or even "for their own health".

Drs are not enemies of breastfeeding.

But they sometimes rely on outdated protocols, their own bias, or just simple lack of knowledge when confronted with lactation problems.

Just as you see a specialist when you need dental care, or a midwife for pregnancy, or an optometrist for vision issues, it's important to see the right specialist when encountering infant feeding challenges. You won't expect your dentist to catch your baby!

🌸Lactation Professionals do many hours of lactation specific counseling and clinical practise, as well as staying up to date with the latest research in the field. Many are also (or were!) breastfeeding moms like you are, and understand the unique challenges that comes with motherhood. 🌸

If ever you receive advice from a healthcare provider regarding breastfeeding or infant feeding, you are COMPLETELY within your rights to get second, or even third opinions of other specialists and experts in the field.

YOU are your baby's advocate. YOU are the advocate of your OWN health. Trust your gut. Trust your instincts. Make informed decisions. 💞

Unless you ordered a Robot Baby, your baby is very unlikely to sleep or eat at the same time, and for the same length of time every day 🫣

Baby trackers and apps can sometimes put us into the mindset of over analysing baby's feeding and sleeping times and general schedule - why is it different today? Is something wrong? Panic!

The truth is, not even we as adults do things perfectly the same every day...sometimes we want a bigger dinner, sometimes a smaller one and we scarf it down! Some days we need an extra nap, or want to lie in. Let's afford our babies the same grace we do ourselves - to be real humans, and not managed down to the second.

Enjoy your newborn and forget about how long they are sleeping or nursing...if they're gaining weight well, are content (and sometimes fussy!) and have sparkling eyes, it means you have a real life human baby, and not a little robot 🤗

It can be challenging when you are given advice for reflux management that involves using thickeners, or switching to formula. Reviewing the evidence may support decision making in this regard. 🌸

Just like during pregnancy and postpartum, when regular check-ins with your midwife or gynecologist are vital to monitor you, your baby’s growth, address concerns, and make necessary adjustments, follow-ups in lactation care are just as important.

Breastfeeding is a dynamic process, and very rarely is it a one-time fix. Ongoing support and follow-up consultations are often needed to make sure both you and your baby continue to thrive.

A follow-up isn’t just a repeat of the first appointment. It’s a chance to see how things are going, to ask new questions, and to adjust your plan as your baby grows and changes. What worked last week might not work this week - feeding patterns, latch, and behavior evolve quickly, and your feeding plan should evolve too.

If you were given specific exercises or strategies, a follow-up allows us to assess whether they’re working as intended or if they need to be adapted. If a particular latching technique isn’t quite right, we can explore alternative approaches and, where needed, arrange referrals for additional support.

Regular follow-ups ensure that progress is monitored, challenges are addressed early, and you have continuous guidance throughout your feeding journey. Families who stay connected tend to reach their goals more easily and with greater confidence.

Breastfeeding is a process that grows and changes - follow-up care helps you stay supported every step of the way.

Stay in touch. Stay informed. Stay empowered.
