Lymphatic drainage massage, also known as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a massage that encourages the natural drainage of lymph, a fluid that carries waste products away from tissues. It helps move excess fluid from congested areas to functional lymph nodes, relieving swelling, particularly for conditions like lymphedema often related to cancer treatment.

How it works:

Stimulates lymph flow: The massage uses a series of light, rhythmic skin stretches to stimulate and open lymphatic vessels, promoting the movement of lymph fluid.

Moves fluid to healthy nodes: The technique redirects fluid from areas where lymph nodes are blocked or damaged to healthy, working lymph nodes where it can be properly filtered and excreted.

Deep breathing: Sessions often incorporate deep breathing exercises, such as diaphragmatic breathing, to help open deeper lymphatic pathways and increase fluid movement toward the heart.

What it's used for:

Lymphedema: A primary use is to relieve swelling (lymphedema) that occurs when the lymphatic system is disrupted, for example, after lymph node removal during cancer surgery.

Post-surgical recovery: It can aid in a quicker recovery from surgery by managing swelling.

Reducing puffiness: Gentle MLD can be used on the face to reduce congestion and puffiness, such as under the eyes.
