Children need us to co-regulate them: how do we do that?

My actions, thoughts and body posture will affect the person in front of me.

Children (infants, pre-schoolers, young primary children) do not know how to return to calm (a regulated nervous system) by themselves. They are sponges. They need us as adults to model how to return to calm.

Herewith, a brief summary about what it means to help children to co-regulate.

Most of us don’t like to talk about child sexual abuse. We tend to look the other way whenever it’s talked about because it’s simply just too painful to hear, to say the least.

The reality is that child sexual abuse is not the old-man-in-the-dirty-raincoat anymore. It’s happening in every community. It can even happen in your neighbour’s house, right next to you, or at your own house - behind close doors where nobody can see and know the truth.

I’m sharing a brief summary of why it’s important for parents or primary caregivers to take note of their responsibility of the prevention and awareness of sexual abuse.

If we can increase the awareness of the dynamics of sexual abuse and communicate it on a level which does not intimidate or confuse the child or making the child feel unsafe, then we can help the community to combat this violent act against children.

Tune into Radio Tygerberg 104fm for the next 3 Tuesdays when we talk about molestation.

How and who we are today is a consequence of words. Some walk confidently in their calling because of words spoken over them. Some have fears or insecurities because of words spoken to them, about them, or around them. Some became a better friend, parent, wife/husband because someone told them the truth.

Therefore, words have the power to make us or made us who we are and how we respond to ourselves, the people around us and God.

Words are powerful tools. We have the ability to change the narrative. Use words wisely.

SCHOOL ANXIETY

School anxiety is especially triggered by school related situations. I have first-hand experience and can identify with those parents who are facing the challenges of an anxious child. But let me share a little bit more on the topic.

School anxiety refers to fears, worries, or stress that a child experience in relation or participating in school.

School anxieties can manifest in many ways such as feeling nervous before going to school, being excessively worried about academic performance, experiencing social anxieties around peers and teachers, being afraid of a teacher or teachers, or feeling overwhelmed by the demands of schoolwork.

School anxieties can interfere with the learner’s ability to concentrate, learn and fully participate in school activities.

In the picture below, I briefly explain only a few things of WHAT WE SEE in school anxiety and WHAT MIGHT BE UNDERNEATH the issue.

Remember, parenting is a big responsibility and acquire skill and sensitivity because every parent and child has their own unique personality, developmental phase, temperament and personal challenges (personally or as a family). If you can’t find a solution to the problem, reach out for professional assistance. Remember, we all need help. Children are not born with a parent guide around the umbilical cord.

Parenting does not come with a child-specific manual.

Herewith are a few tips for parents, caregivers and teachers about why children sometimes experience the following reactions after school: meltdowns, whining, withdrawal, isolation, etc after a school day.

Let’s create a safe space for our children to find themselves after an emotionally exhausting day at school.
