I had the pleasure of leading a guided walk for a family of five through my favourite local reserve Grootvadersbosch. It was great to share the beauty and diversity of this special place with them and they really seemed to enjoy the experience.
The reserve protects a 250-hectare Afromontane forest, home to around 35 indigenous tree species, including ironwood, yellowwood, stinkwood, and red alder. It also features historical exotic plantations dating from 1896 to 1913, with species such as Californian redwood, camphor, bluegum, and oak.
It’s always a pleasure to spend time in the dense indigenous forest, surrounded by such a rich variety of birdsong. The Duiwenhoks River was flowing beautifully from the kloof and the rock pools were perfect for a refreshing swim.
