‼️Blood shortage after high demand from hospitals‼️

“Blood stocks have dropped significantly and we are in dire need of blood donations.”

A critical shortage of blood supplies at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has been attributed to high demand from hospitals.

The service also said Covid-19 restrictions limited the collection of adequate blood stocks.

“Officials were not able to access schools, colleges, and corporate for blood drives,” the SANBS said in a statement.

“Blood stocks have thus dropped significantly and we are in dire need of blood donations.”

Group O blood stocks were especially affected and all South Africans were called to donate a unit of blood, Silungile Mlambo, SANBS chief marketing officer said.

“Blood group O is considered the universal blood group because anyone – regardless of blood type – can receive type O blood.”

Infants: 12 to 16 hours.
