Farm stay in our Nana Flat is available. Cute and cosy fully equipped tiny home for 2 people. Off grid living with all the comforts and spectacular sunsets.
Homemade preserves, chutney, atchar, pickles, biscuits, fresh produce and other nice goodies! Some background…
In 2020, in the midst of Covid, I became a grandmother for the first time. August (Gus) was my inspiration to start a little home-based venture called Granny DeBee’s. I knitted like I had never knitted before, making Gus mountains of animals and toys. I baked, and made jams, pickles and chutneys. My biscotti became a firm favourite locally and at various farm stalls during my many trips up and down to Cape Town — a wonderful way to help cover travel expenses! As we all know, the only constant in life is change. Since 2025, Granny DeBee’s produce and crafts have fallen under the umbrella of The Other Side Farm, where our family lives and grows together. After the upheaval of Covid, my long-standing business Ingwe Adventures (founded in 2004) became operational again in 2021. While I remain passionate about team-building and outdoor education, I felt a strong pull back to writing. To date, I have ghostwritten 24 books across various genres, and this is where I now choose to spend more of my time. Ingwe Adventures is currently in what I fondly call a “slow sale” to one of my facilitators — someone who is a perfect fit. This allows me to move into a more advisory role and focus on what truly feels like my path. It also gives my husband and me the flexibility to spend three months each year in the UK working at music festivals — something we enjoy and a great way to fund our travels together. Our two sons now live on The Other Side Farm with their families, and we are blessed with four granddaughters. Having three generations living on the land together feels incredibly special. Off-grid living and sustainability are deeply ingrained in our family life. Growing our own food, watching our trees mature year by year, saving water, harnessing solar power and living simply brings a fulfilment that’s hard to put into words. Everyone on the farm has played a part in building their homes, sharing spaces along the way (sometimes challenging!), but always with a shared goal — and lots of love 😊
Our carport, once a shelter for the leaking caravan we lived in during our build in 2019, has since been converted into a cosy tiny home called the Nana Flat. It’s perfect for couples or two friends wanting to experience life in The Crags. You can find it on Airbnb as The Nana Flat at The Other Side Farm, or get in touch directly. We also rent out our two-bedroom family home when we travel — ideal for nature lovers and animal enthusiasts (2 dogs, 2 cats and chickens included!). The Other Side Farm is our little piece of paradise, and we’d love to hear from you if you’d like to visit, stay, or buy some of our organically grown produce, homemade jams, pickles, chutneys and freshly baked goodies. My mantra: be kind to one another and find something to smile about every day.

It's that time of the year again when I harvest quince (Cydonia oblonga) from our massive tree (well... what the birds left!).🐦🍏
Such a weird looking fruit, sort of looks like an apple but has to be cooked to eat. Here's something interesting that I didn't know before - it is believed to have been a sacred emblem of the goddesss Aprodite.🔱
Making the jelly is quite a mission as it is quite hard to chop, and then the long process of cooking it and draining etc...but well worth it for the delicious bright red quince jelly result. I always an amazed and find it quite magical how a green yellowish skin and creamy white inside of it can produce such an incredible colour! My musings while I stir pot...oh, and the smell while it cooks is delicious 😋
Besides being lekker tasty and an ideal side sauce with meat, cheese or even on a sandwich, it also has many health benefits.
Nutrients: Rich in fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants
Health Properties: Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, digestive and anti-ulcerative.
Will post pics of the final product for sale. 😁

Scarecrow making time! This really helps with keeping the birds of our fruit trees. We don't mind sharing, but have lost a lot of fruit this year.
Almost time to harvest what's left of our quinces for quince jelly!

I'm taking a break from baking and making, focusing on doing it just for family and friends for a while. So this page is not going to feature much until it moves me again to get back to making and baking stuff to sell. Thanks for all the support I have had since 2020 when this venture 'just happened'

We have been pretty quiet on this side due to my core business, Ingwe Adventures picking up (yay finally!) and my freelance writing taking priority over baking! I am happy to make to order so please get in touch if you would like any of our yummies.

My most special darling grandchild August, (Gus) who is 7 months old, was my inspiration for the name Granny DeBees Products that began in May 2020.
During Lockdown (there will be many stories to tell.. ‘before lockdown’ and ‘after lockdown’ - one thing is for sure is that our lives will never be ‘back to normal” we have all felt such a shift in our lives, whether it was welcome or not.
Never ever, has there been or; perhaps will ever be,such a true understanding of the phrase “the only thing in life that is constant; is change’)
Well... back to the point of why I started this venture... my current business Ingwe Adventures cannot operate as we do teambuilding and all sort of fun adventure and outdoor stuff in groups for schools, families and tourists, so will be a while yet until we can open. Of course, no income is always an issue and I am not really the type that just can sit around idle for long periods!
So, Gus being my inspiration and of course being a GRAN - I had to make stuff for her! Under guidance of her other wonderful granny, who was the one who really got me going on the knitting part (thanks Cath!) Her instruction, generosity of wool, needles and patience (a lot) I finally got the swing of it.
I started to make some toys for Gus and they just abounded from my knitting needles - bees (of course!) elephant, monkey, penguin, tortoise are just a few of the range that I am going to continue with. It seems I have a knack for knitting and a bit of crocheting and weirdly, I enjoy it too. My Gran on my dad’s side used to knit 100’s of toys for charity and my aunt dug out all her patterns for me. Thanks AJ! It seems that perhaps (it took a long time) the apple rolled my way coming to knitting toys ... who would have thought!?
To give myself a bit of balance, as I get easily bored... I also started baking and baking and baking. At this stage, I am trying to keep the range to a few products so I don’t get completely frazzled in the kitchen. Biscotti, preserves and pickles are on the list for now. Keep eyes on this page as I will be adding some more items as the need demands.
Will be interesting to see where this little venture leads, but for now I am loving it and it fits in with keeping part of my days free to work in my garden and grow food, plant trees and other beautiful indigenous plants.
Stay safe out there, be kind to one another and find something to smile about every day.
