I bet you've not been told that your C-section scar can lead to any of these problems, even sometimes years later... Women are provided with very little information regarding pelvic floor health, pregnancy prep or the postpartum period - which is absolutely NOT right or fair!

Have your C-section scar and pelvic floor checked after pregnancy to prevent any of these issues or to get information on how to aid in healing and restoration of function.

Never believe that your symptoms are a "normal" part of the postpartum period and to just carry on. Although they are common, there are ways to prevent and treat these problems. Visit a Pelvic floor physiotherapist if you have any concerns or questions.

Your Pelvic Floor is involved in much more than you think and connected to many structures and areas in your body.
Don't opt for a quick fix, rather find the reason for your problem- most likely your pelvic floor😉

🏨Visiting your pelvic floor physio post-partum is important, and not only for a 6 week post-partum visit. Things don't just miraculously turn back to normal at 6 weeks, neither do symptoms only occur at 6 weeks.

🌷Consult with your Pelvic floor physiotherapist about perineal massage and other birth preparations.

Perineal tearing can happen during child birth while pushing, it is quite common and most first-time moms will experience this during their first child birthing process. Tearing can happen in different directions along the perineum, when Doctors notice the perineum might tear badly or if the perineal skin is not moving or opening up enough to let baby through the vaginal opening, they will perform a controlled and skilled surgical cut/incision called an episiotomy. Stitches will be put in after perineal tearing depending on the grade as well as after the episiotomy.

But don’t worry, there are things to be done to prepare for this, to help minimize tearing and to help the healing process (always consult with your medical professional first- Gynae, midwife, pelvic floor physio)

🚺The “just in case” p*e:

Do you find yourself in a pattern of needing to p*e every 30min or so? Are you the woman who goes to the bathroom “just in case”?🤔 Do you p*e “just in case” there won’t be a bathroom on the road ahead? Does this sound familiar:” There’s a long drive ahead, let’s go p*e just in case”. Have you realized that you often p*e before getting into bed but then also go again a few minutes later, “just in case”, before falling asleep because you don’t want to wake up at night?
By doing this you train your bladder to empty more frequently without having filled up all the way- thus leading to an over trained and overactive bladder.

Some women develop leaking symptoms with bladder dysfunction which can be because of over training your bladder. The pelvic floor can then be affected. Sometimes bladder symptoms can even be because of a dysfunctional pelvic floor, for example not being able to empty your bladder fully and then leaking due to an overactive or tight pelvic floor.

👐Consult with a pelvic floor physiotherapist if you are struggling with any of the following symptoms: frequent urination, urgency to get to the toilet, leaking accidents, difficulty with initiating a urine stream, straining to p*e, having to p*e again after standing up from the toilet.
