For a while now, I have been doing cold water swimming, now you may think I'm crazy, but there are 8 benefits to cold water swimming:
1. It boosts the immune system - the cold water boosts the white blood cell count as the body is forced to react to changing conditions. Over time, your body becomes better at activating its defences.
2. It gives a natural high - when swimming in cold water, our 'happy hormones', known as endorphins are activated. Endorphins is the chemical that the brain produces to make us feel good during exercising activities.
3. It improves circulation - swimming in cold water flushes our veins, arteries and capillaries and it also forces blood to the surface as well as helps to warm our extremities. Repeating cold water swimming on a daily basis will help us adapt to the cold.
4. It increases libido - a swim in cold water boosts oestrogen and testosterone production and it adds an edge to fertility and libido.
The benefits of increased libido include more confidence, higher self-esteem, and enhanced mood.
5. It burns calories - our hearts pump faster in cold water and our bodies have to work harder to keep everything warm whilst swimming. More calories are burned in cold water swimming than swimming in warmer water.
6. It reduces stress - as we first get in, the cold water places stress on the body physically and mentally, but as we stay in for longer, it makes us calm and and relaxes us.
7. It is a great way of socialising and making new friends - it brings people together like facing a challenge and sharing the experience as a group.
8. Swimming is also a great form of cardio, so it'll also help us burn some body fat and if you have any muscular injury, then cold water swimming is the best exercise as it reduces inflammation.
