What happens when a group moves beyond words?

In the Basic Experiential Workshop in Pretoria, Mandy experienced how movement can unlock vulnerability taking groups beyond surface conversations into something deeper, more real, and more shared. Because the truth is: Group spaces are vulnerable, but they are also where connection happens. Where we realise that what we feel isn’t isolated… it’s shared, just expressed differently. And that changes everything.

If you’re ready to bring this kind of depth into your own groups and practice:

“You cannot teach a person anything. You can only help them find it within themselves.” This idea, attributed to Galileo, aligns deeply with how we understand growth at OTGrow.

In group therapy, change doesn’t happen because knowledge is delivered, it happens because the space allows people to discover, express, and claim what already exists within them. The IGM creates those conditions through shared activity, participation, and process. Treasures surface not because they are pointed out, but because the group makes it safe to uncover them. That’s what makes this model truly extraordinary.

Question: What have you noticed participants discovering about themselves in your groups?

Following feedback from a recent course evaluation, a few practitioners suggested that the Bumper Activity Book could form part of the Basic Experiential Course offering with the book included and its cost built into the course. It’s something we’re carefully considering, and before making any decisions, we’d really like to hear from a wider group.

What would work best for you?

• Yes, please combine them into one offering
• No, keep them separate so the book can be purchased independently
• I’m undecided / it doesn’t make a difference

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments; this helps shape the direction we take.

Thank you!

Carl Rogers reminded us that the good life is not about comfort, it’s about courage, growth, and becoming more fully who we are.

In group therapy, we see this every day. Growth asks something of people. It stretches them, invites risk, and calls for environments where it feels safe enough to step into the stream of life rather than watch from the edges. Rogers, the father of counselling, believed deeply in human potential and in the role of skilled facilitation to support people toward an optimal life.

If this way of thinking resonates with you, our training offers space to explore Rogers’s ideas in practice and deepen your work with groups. Growth isn’t passive. It’s practiced.

What does “the courage to be” look like in your groups?

Social cohesion doesn’t happen in theory, it happens in rooms, teams, boards, and communities.

If your work places you inside complex group dynamics, this course offers a way of learning that stays connected to real life while you are living it. Advancing Social Cohesion in Groups & Teams invite professionals to engage with concepts and immediately test them in their own contexts: workplaces, organisations, systems, and communities, then return with insight that shapes the next session. This is not a passive course. It’s reflective, responsive, and grounded in lived professional experience.

- Online course.
- NQF Level 8 a requirement.
- 36 CPD points.
- Open across sectors.

Can crafts do more than just “keep the group busy”? Absolutely!

In Part 3 of our How to Use Crafts in Group Therapy series, Louise explores how crafts can be used to support group cohesion not just individual participation. This episode looks at how certain activities can unintentionally splinter a group, and how more intentional shared craft tasks can help members feel seen, connected, and part of something together.

Louise shares practical examples of craft activities that build belonging and strengthen the group process, reminding us that it’s often not about the craft itself but about what the shared experience represents for the group.

If you facilitate groups, this episode will help you think more intentionally about how your craft choices either support or weaken cohesion.

In this video, you’ll learn:
* Why some craft activities may reduce group cohesion.
* How shared projects can build belonging and connection.
* The difference between “doing crafts together” and using crafts therapeutically in groups.
* Practical ideas for cohesion-building craft activities.
* How to link your craft choices to your group goals.

In group therapy, it’s rarely the big interventions that stay with people. It’s the moment someone feels truly listened to. The kindness offered without agenda. The small, intentional acts that quietly say: you matter here.

As therapists or facilitators, we often underestimate just how powerful these moments are, yet they are often where the real work happens. Not in the activity alone, but in the connection, the safety, and the shared human experience within the group.

Sometimes, the smallest act is the intervention.

We’d love to hear: What small moments have made the biggest difference in your groups?

Crafts in occupational therapy groups should never be “just crafts.”

In Part 2 of our crafts series, Louise explores how crafts can be used as a means to an end supporting therapeutic goals such as frustration tolerance, following instructions, concentration, attention span, and prevocational skills. This episode invites occupational therapists and group facilitators to ask:

- What is the therapeutic goal?
- Where is the intervention?
- How is the group being used as part of the process?

Because when crafts are used intentionally, they become much more than a finished product. They become a space for growth, reflection, skill-building, and meaningful therapeutic change.
