🔥 Which glute exercise packs the biggest punch?

🍑 Collings et al. (2023) set out to determine gluteal muscle forces across different exercises.

📊 The authors ranked the exercises into different tiers based on the estimated muscle forces.

🏆️ The single leg RDL with resistance was the only exercise to be ranked a Tier 1 exercise in all three muscle groups.

🥇 Meanwhile, the body weight side plank was ranked as a Tier 1 exercise for the gluteus minimus and medius.

💡 For rehabilitation purposes, we may want to consider utilizing lower tier exercises and/or reducing load for those that are more load compromised, and higher tier exercises for those that are able to tolerate higher muscle forces.

One of our most frequently asked questions: How does Dry Needling work?

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique used primarily by physiotherapists, chiropractors, and other healthcare professionals. The aim is to alleviate pain and improve function in muscles and connective tissue. It involves inserting thin, solid filament needles into specific trigger points or tight bands within the muscle tissue. Dry needling targets trigger points, which are sensitive areas of muscle that can be painful and can refer pain to other parts of the body. These trigger points often result from muscle overuse, injury, or stress.

Mechanism of Action:

Insertion of Needles: The practitioner inserts a thin needle into the skin and muscle directly at or around the trigger point. The procedure typically does not inject any substance (hence the term "dry"), and the needles used are similar to those used in acupuncture.
Local Response: The needle insertion can cause a local twitch response in the muscle, which is a reflexive contraction. This response can help release tight bands of muscle and relax the surrounding tissues.
Improved Blood Flow: The insertion of needles may increase blood flow to the area, facilitating healing by bringing nutrients and oxygen to the affected tissues and helping to remove metabolic waste.
Neurological Effects: Dry needling may also influence the nervous system, potentially interrupting pain signals being sent to the brain and encouraging a decrease in pain perception.
Release of Endorphins: The body may release its natural pain-relieving chemicals, such as endorphins, as a result of the dry needling procedure, which can contribute to pain relief.
