Medicare is pleased to announce that Medshield medical scheme, through the introduction of their new SmartCare option, will be the first medical scheme to reimburse videomed consultations. Medshield members will be able to visit any Medicare pharmacy clinic have a videomed, nurses consultation or wellness assessment, paid from the SmartCare benefit. Medicare pharmacies and clinics, in collaboration with our partner Healthforce, currently do almost 4000 videomed consultations a month. We truly believe that this partnership with Medshield will unlock the potential of telemedicine in South Africa and greatly improve access to quality, affordable healthcare.

I am a self-confessed fitness ju**ie. I firmly believe that a healthy and strong body means a healthy and strong mind. Unfortunately, yesterday I pushed a bit too hard – yoh, the pain! I felt like I had ripped my arms out of their sockets but it was just a bit of a strain (I have a low pain threshold ok?). Thank goodness I could go to my nearest Medicare Pharmacy after gym as they are open until 9 pm. I got the advice and products I needed to get me back on track and operating like a legend in no time.

uMama is my role model. She raised, fed and clothed me, nursed me through fevers, runny tummies and kept me off the streets and out of trouble. Over the weekend I realised something wasn’t right with her, and it wasn’t just her age. So I took her to my Medicare Pharmacy where we had an in-pharmacy Videomed doctor’s consult. The tests showed that she had diabetes and with the pharmacist’s assistance we got her the treatment she needed quickly and affordably. The only problem now is that the sisters and uMama look at me, whisper, nod their heads and laugh quietly. I’m in so much trouble.

Last Saturday, after another loooong day (you got to have more than one pot on the stove if you want to be a true entrepreneur) and in desperate need of a ‘pick-me-up’ booster I went to my Medicare Pharmacy. I was so glad that I didn’t have to wait until morning. Some, Medicare Pharmacies, like mine, have extended hours staying open until 9 pm! I often go late, to do some wellness checks and shopping. I am an only child, but I have sisters (and brothers) who keep me on the straight and narrow. At my Medicare Pharmacy the clinic sisters and pharmacists are always ready to help me, giving me advice on getting and staying healthy. We talk about everything – yesterday one asked me why I’m still single and why I haven’t brought uMama to visit them! It is nice to know they care. They are very professional and knowledgeable, but won’t put up with my “whatever” stories and WILL tell me what’s best for me (whether I want to listen or not!). Oh, how I love my Medicare sisters!
