Hearing loss affects everyone, not only the older generation. You are more likely to seem "OLD" whe you stop going to social gatherings or when you constantly need to ask for repetition.
Today's hearing aids have modern features that will even make you seem YOUNGER; like direct streaming of sound from your phone to your hearing devices & muting your hearing aids when you don't want to listen to your annoying co-worker 😜😄

Actor Ted Danson was recently fit with new hearing aids and had a very funny reason for why they are “brilliant” when discussing them with Kelly Clarkson on her talk show. Check out the interview in this video: https://youtu.be/elDiD4_kRGg.🦻🏻
Do you have any funny stories about what you can hear now that you have hearing aids? We’d love to hear them!

“I feel like I’m too young to wear hearing aids!” 😒
We often think hearing loss is associated with old age when, in fact, no one is ever too young to wear hearing aids!
Withdrawing from social settings, skipping happy hour or dinner out at a noisy restaurant, or constantly asking for repetitions is more likely to make you seem “old” than wearing hearing aids would!

Hearing loss can contribute to dementia in many ways.
Social isolation, depression, and lack of stimulation in the auditory processing portions of the brain may all contribute to cognitive decline and poor memory.
As your cognition declines, it can be more difficult to understand what people are saying, especially in background noise. 🧠

If you notice that you are struggling to follow speech clearly, please reach out to any of our Independent Audiologists https://independentaudiologists.co.za/find-an-audiologist/ (link in bio) to schedule a baseline hearing test! It's never too early to make an action plan in your hearing healthcare.

When we have hearing loss, our brains miss out on important sensory input from our surroundings.
Research has shown that mild hearing loss requires extra work from the brain to compensate.
The visual system has to work harder to fill in the blanks by using visual cues, like lip reading.
This increases the overall cognitive load required to hear and listen and requires the brain to use more of its resources for what used to be a simple task. 🫠

Being fit with hearing aids can help provide the brain with the missing sensory input so it does not need to use as many resources to hear and listen!

Our kidneys work hard to remove toxins from our bodies. 👇

This means that when people have kidney disease, toxins can accumulate in the body and can cause damage to tissues in the inner ear!

One study found that over half of their patients with chronic kidney disease had some amount of hearing loss!

If you or someone you know is suffering from kidney disease, then make sure to have routine hearing evaluations!

“So if my hearing loss is ‘mild’...does that mean I can hold off a few more years before needing hearing aids?”

Believe me, I get it. Many patients are initially apprehensive about pursuing hearing aids. Whether it’s cosmetics, cost, readiness, rumored ‘bad experiences’, or denial…

But did you know that a recent study in 2021 found that early treatment with well-fit hearing aids on individuals with MILD hearing loss led to:

→ A significant reduction in cross-modal reorganization (aka your brain is working less hard to hear, no longer needing to rely on compensatory strategies!)

→ Significant enhancement in cognitive and speech perception performance scores

→ High levels of self-perceived benefit and satisfaction with hearing aids!!

Truthfully, being motivated is a huge variable in success with hearing aids use. But this information above further supports that even if your hearing loss is “just mild”, it might be time to consider ways to improve your quality of life sooner than later!

Did you know the field of audiology is actually relatively young, with the first audiology program created only in 1946?! 👀
As World War II progressed, service members who were deployed often returned home with substantial hearing deficits, evidenced by a significant reduction in their ability to recognize speech. As a result, the field of clinical audiology was formalized to assist the many young and otherwise healthy service members who required rehabilitation (audiology.org).
We found this information interesting as Memorial Day weekend approaches!
