Feeling constantly tired or low on energy? It could be iron deficiency.

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies and can affect energy, concentration, and overall wellbeing — especially when oral supplements are not enough.

At our Mosel practice, Dr. Ciara Jackson offers safe, supervised IV iron infusions to help restore iron levels more effectively.

In this photo, Dr. Jackson is preparing a patient for an infusion in a comfortable, carefully monitored setting.

Who may benefit?
• Patients with confirmed iron deficiency
• Those who have not responded to oral supplements
• Patients needing faster correction of iron levels

Treatment includes:
• Medical assessment and blood tests
• Comfortable infusion (30–60 minutes)
• Follow-up blood tests to monitor improvement

Our focus is always on patient safety, personalised care, and evidence-based treatment.

Your health matters at every stage of life.

Whether you are young or older, regular health check-ups can play an important role in maintaining your wellbeing. Some health conditions may develop without obvious symptoms, which is why routine medical assessments can help monitor your health and identify potential concerns early.

Feeling well on the outside does not always mean that everything is well internally. Taking time for a check-up is a responsible step toward looking after your long-term health.

If it has been some time since your last consultation, you may consider scheduling a routine check-up with a healthcare professional.

Intravenous Iron Infusions: Restoring Your Energy from Within

If you have been feeling constantly tired, light-headed, mentally foggy, or short of breath, your body may be signalling iron deficiency or iron-deficiency anaemia.

Iron plays an essential role in the production of haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout your body. When iron levels are low, your organs and tissues may not receive the oxygen they require to function optimally — which can leave you feeling exhausted, weak, and unable to function at your usual level.

Symptoms of low iron may include:

• Persistent fatigue or low energy
• Dizziness or light-headedness
• Shortness of breath
• Difficulty concentrating or brain fog
• Headaches or palpitations

For some individuals, intravenous iron infusions may be an effective way to replenish iron stores more efficiently, particularly when oral iron supplements are not well tolerated or when iron levels need to be restored more rapidly.

At our practice, intravenous iron infusions are offered in our clinical rooms in a private, safe, and medically supervised environment, ensuring both patient comfort and clinical care.

Restoring iron levels can make a meaningful difference in how you feel day-to-day, often improving energy levels, concentration, and overall wellbeing.

If ongoing fatigue or symptoms of low iron are affecting your daily life, it may be worthwhile discussing your symptoms with a healthcare professional.

Protect Yourself This Flu Season – Flu Vaccines Now Available

As flu season approaches, Dr. Ciara Jackson and the team at Mindful Medicine encourage patients to take a proactive step in protecting their health.

Seasonal flu vaccines are now available at the practice (Mosel & Thomas Gamble). Annual vaccination helps reduce the risk of influenza and its potential complications, such as bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly for individuals who may be more vulnerable, including older adults, young children, pregnant women, and those with chronic medical conditions.

Protecting yourself also helps protect those around you. Flu vaccines are available for both medical aid and cash patients.

Limited stock is available, and early vaccination is recommended.
Please contact our offices for more information or to book your vaccination appointment.

Persistent bloating or abdominal swelling should not be ignored.

Don’t ignore your health — early detection is key.

You may assume ongoing bloating is simply a digestive issue. However, when abdominal swelling is persistent, unexplained, or occurs frequently, it may sometimes be associated with underlying gynaecological conditions, including ovarian health concerns.

If you experience bloating together with pelvic discomfort, feeling full quickly, or changes in appetite, it is important to seek medical evaluation.

Early consultation with a qualified healthcare professional allows for appropriate assessment and timely management.

Could Ureaplasma Be Affecting Your Fertility?

If you’re trying to conceive and everything seems normal, it may be worth asking a deeper question about your reproductive health.

Ureaplasma is a bacterium that can live in the uroge***al tract without causing obvious symptoms, meaning many people are unaware it may be present.

In men, it has been associated in some cases with:
• Urethral inflammation
• Infection within parts of the reproductive tract
• Changes in s***m quality, including motility and function
• Potential difficulty with conception

Ureaplasma may also be present in women, where it can colonise the va**na, cervix, or uterus, and in some situations has been linked to ge***al tract inflammation and reproductive health concerns.

Because many individuals have no symptoms, it can go undetected during routine testing. Modern PCR-based diagnostics allow clinicians to detect organisms like Ureaplasma more accurately, and where clinically appropriate, treatment with prescribed antibiotics may be considered.

Dr Ciara Jackson of Mindful Medicine recently attended the Iron Academy, a national clinical education forum hosted by Aspen Pharmacare in Johannesburg. The invitation-only event brought together healthcare professionals from across South Africa involved in the diagnosis and management of iron deficiency.

The academy included clinicians from multiple disciplines, reflecting the growing understanding that iron deficiency can affect several aspects of health across different patient groups.

Discussions focused on current approaches to interpreting iron studies, identifying underlying causes, and considerations around treatment options, including when intravenous iron therapy may be appropriate.

Mindful Medicine offers assessment and management of iron deficiency within a general practice setting, including clinical evaluation, appropriate investigations, and iron infusions when clinically indicated within a clinical environment that is safe and private.

Prostate Health in Men!

Prostate health is important for men at all ages. The Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test measures a protein produced by the prostate. Changes in PSA levels can indicate a range of conditions, including benign prostate enlargement, inflammation, or, in some cases, prostate cancer.

Key points to know:

- PSA levels naturally increase with age.
- Elevated PSA does not automatically indicate cancer.

Discussing your PSA results with a healthcare professional is important for informed decisions about your health.

World Tuberculosis (TB) Day – 24 March

Tuberculosis remains a significant public health concern, particularly in South Africa, despite being both preventable and curable.

If you have symptoms such as a persistent cough (lasting more than two weeks), unexplained weight loss, night sweats, fever, or fatigue, it is important to consult a doctor.

TB is treatable with a course of specific antibiotics taken over several months, and early diagnosis with good treatment adherence is essential for full recovery and to prevent spread. The disease is also closely linked with HIV/AIDS, reinforcing the importance of integrated care.

Early diagnosis and adherence to treatment are essential — not only for individual outcomes, but also for reducing community transmission.

Heartburn… or Something More Serious?

That burning sensation in your chest after a meal—many people assume it’s just “heartburn.” And often, it is. But if you’re experiencing it frequently, persistently, or with discomfort that feels different, it may be your body asking for closer attention.

Reflux can present as chest burning, a sour taste, chronic cough, or even throat irritation. While it is commonly related to lifestyle or diet, ongoing symptoms may indicate gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) or other underlying conditions that require proper evaluation.

The good news is that these symptoms are often manageable with the right treatment, which may include lifestyle adjustments and appropriate medication to ease discomfort and reduce recurrence.

If you’ve found yourself relying on over-the-counter remedies or adjusting your routine to avoid discomfort, it may be time to take the next step.

A thorough medical assessment allows for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management—ensuring your symptoms are not overlooked or misinterpreted.
