Healthcare workers are often the first line of contact and support for women suffering from perinatal mental and emotional distress yet they often do not know how to help or where help can be obtained. Further, myths and misinformation are prevalent. Health care professionals are invited to a free CPD accredited workshop facilitated by Mums Support Network and SADAG KZN - a project of the Gender and Mental Health Initiative - to gain a deeper understanding of maternal mental health, learn what resources are available and how these can be accessed. It is a myth that blacks do not require the use of sunscreen. While black skin does not tan or burn easily, the damage caused by UV rays still occurs with sun exposure. In addition blacks tend to suffer from disorders of pigmentation and use of sunscreens will prevent further darkening of the skin marks. The other issue is that black people have a wide range of varying skin tones. Some people are lighter and others are darker, so it’s even more important for those blacks who are fair in complexion to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreens to prevent the skin from tanning and getting burnt . I often hear patients complaining saying that the skin is getting darker(ukugqunqa in Zulu , phatshile in Xhosa )particularly in summer. This is all due to what we call spontaneous tanning which is induced by the sun rays. So if you don’t want to get darker, or don’t want to age faster or if you have marks on your face and you don’t want them to get darker ,stay away from the sun, keep a hat and umbrella in your hand bag, wear long sleeves clothing and use a sunscreen as described above. Avoid working outdoors between 10am-3pm.
•Avoid jogging or running or going to the beach between 10-3pm or when the sun is out.

Put sunscreen on dry skin about 15 minutes before going outside.
•Use at least 1/2 teaspoon (2,5 ml) for:
•your face
•your neck
•each arm
•Use at least 1 teaspoon (5 ml) for:
•the front of your body
•back of your body
•each leg
•Put on more sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours. This is very important if you get wet or are in the sun for a while.

If it normally takes you 10 minutes for your skin to become red without sun protection, an SPF 15 sunscreen would delay this reaction by 100 minutes. While this is a general rule, it is usually not possible to delay sunburn 15 times as long because sunscreen usually wears off with perspiration and water.

here are many brand names and generic sunscreens on the market. Use a sunscreen:
•• With a SPF of 30 or higher.
•• That is water-resistant or sweat-resistant if you will be in the water or sweating.
•• That protects against both UVA and UVB rays. These are called broad spectrum sunscreens. Broad spectrum sunscreens have:
•o Antihelios (mexoryl)
•o Parsol 1789 (avobenzone)
•o Titanium dioxide
•o Zinc oxide
•• With micronized or transparent zinc oxide. These may be cosmetically better for people with dark skin tones.
