17 November 2020, is World Prematurity Day!

Did you know that 1 in 10 babies worldwide, are born premature.

Audiologists play an important role in assessing the hearing of premature babies in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), as their ears & hearing can be adversely affected by several difficulties, faced by these tiny babies.

Let's create awareness for these tiny super heroes 🙂

Tinnitus can be caused by many different factors, one of which is exposure to excessive levels of noise, for extended periods of time. This exposure could also be the cause of an associated hearing loss.

Who is most at risk of possibly developing tinnitus, as a result of this? The image describes some of these individuals, as seniors, those involved with military or law enforcement, musicians and attendees of very loud music concerts, and lastly the construction sector workers, or those exposed to excessive levels of occupational noise in their place of work.

This list is not exhaustive but gives an idea of who is at risk for hearing loss and/or tinnitus.

Tinnitus is the clinical terminology, used to describe the presence of a sound in the ears when there is no external source of sound present.

The majority of the time, the sound in the ears can only be heard by the sufferer (so it is subjective).

Tinnitus is normally described by the sufferer, as being a ringing, buzzing, humming, hissing, roaring or even a whistling sound. Some describe the sound like a chirping as well.
