KidzGolf

KidzGolf KidzGolf @ Umkomaas Golf Club offers a family-friendly golf clinic every Saturday 8 - 9am during school term to get budding golfers into this great game!

As a family-friendly club we're committed to developing the next generation of golfers. For the past few years Umkomaas has hosted a weekly golf clinic for youngsters hosted by our resident golf coach, EGTF qualified Devlyn Fraser, ably assisted by Lindani Mthiyane. Currently we have a great group of boys and girls who are progressing in their skill, aiming to hit the fairways soon!

Lessons take place 08h00 - 09h00 every Saturday morning during school term at the club.

No equipment is necessary as clubs, balls etc. are available for use during the lessons. Children should come dressed appropriately, with a collared shirt, closed sports shoes and cap. Sunblock is always recommended.

Kids begin their golfing journey learning the basics, starting on the putting green before progressing to the practice tee. In addition to learning the skills, the kids will also be taught the rules and etiquette of golf, ensuring that they're able to transition to the course and competition.

All club members are eligible to send their children/grandchildren to KidzGolf at no cost. Non-members pay a small fee of just R100 per child, per year, to take part in KidzGolf.

If you're interested, simply come down to the club next Saturday morning just before 8am to meet our coaches and learn more.

Moms & Dads you can enjoy a cup of coffee or delicious breakfast on our verandah while you wait for your budding Tim Clark or Garth Mulroy to finish their lesson.

Hello KidzGolfers

Great news!

After all the delays caused by the flooding on our course, we can start again this Saturday, 7 June 2025 (08h00 - 09h00).

A reminder, esp as we have some newbies, please adhere to the following:

(1) Answer the poll to indicate attendance. This is critical for our planning.

(2) Being on time is non-negotiable in golf. Be at the club, ready to play at 08h00. Its very disruptive to arrive late!

(3) Dressed neatly with takkies & socks. Hats, sunscreen & water if its hot.

All registered KidzGolfers (parents) should be on our WhatsApp Group where we post our weekly poll. Please respond by no later than 3pm on Friday to confirm your attendance

How many parents have sabotaged their children’s enjoyment of Fortnite or Minecraft by haunting their child’s every move?

Answer…….. almost certainly none.

Why?

Answer. Because we re not bothered about the result. We couldn’t care less. As long as the kids playing their various games are enjoying themselves.

So what changes with golf? Could it be that we are overly invested in the outcome?

If that’s the case, let’s admit it dads, we could be seriously getting in the way of our kids falling in love with a game that has lifelong potential, a social, friendly, healthy GAME!

Never lose sight of the fact that if your child doesnt love golf, they’ll walk away at some point. It’s their choice

So if the average age of a PGA Tour debut is 27 and every 7yr old is a million balls away from the requisite number of practice hours required…….. All we can usually do, is get in the way.

No adult would agree to 20yr apprenticeship, strewn with tension and angst, with zero guarantees at the end of it.

Let your kids explore golf for what they love about it. Sit back, scroll, chat to other parents in lesson time, and offer gentle encouragement and praise.

Remove the fear of failure

Re enforce the playing of “just a game”

Listen to what kids say they like about golf, ie time with you/fun/ games, and give them more of that

This is how Tommy started.

He loved playing golf. The absolute No1
