With the open day for expecting mothers coming up at the hospital. We wanted to take this opportunity to remind mom's to be about how good it is to stay active during pregnancy.

Every pregnancy is unique and that is why it is important to clear exactly what would be safe for you to do and if there are any contra indications to take into account with your DR.

Physiotherapists can then help put that into action with you as well as make sure you are safe.

Moderate to vigorous physical activity is proven to be beneficial for both mother and baby in most pregnancies with the necessary modifications.

For uncomplicated pregnancy and low risk pregnancy, physical activity has many important health benefits.

Reduces risk of high blood pressure

Reduces risk of gestational diabetes

Helps you to maintain a healthy weight and return to your pre pregnancy weight more easily

Mental health benefits – improves mood, reduces anxiety and stress and improves sleep pattern

Reduces risk of post natal depression

Increases strength and stamina

Prepares you for labour and delivery

Reduces aches and pains during pregnancy, such as pelvic or back pain.

Physiotherapy also helps after delivery or
c section with

Mobilization
Joint or back pain
Strengthening pelvic floor muscles

As well as assistance with teaching positions to hold baby to encourage a good latch for breastfeeding.

And treating complications such as cracked ni***es or mastitis.

For more information or an appointment please feel free to contact any of our Physiotherapists at any of our branches.

What do you wear to your physio appointment?

In general, your Physio will try to assess you through and around your clothes or ask you to change into a gown if needed to be able to assess covered areas and keep you comfortable.

You may not have to undress at all, if you wear clothes that are suitable, such as shorts, loose fitting pants, a loose t-shirt, or tank top.

Depending on the area of the body that needs to be assessed, different areas might need to be uncovered, but if you wear the correct clothing you can help expose the area that needs assessment and treatment.

Recommended Clothing for your Physiotherapy appointment.

Hair tie.
Tanktop.
Loose-fitting
T-shirt.
Loose-fitting pants.
Socks.
Sneakers,
flat shoes or athletic shoes.
Athletic or comfortable shorts or pants with elastic waistband.

You can help us, help you 😊

Our Physiotherapists who work in the hospital wards are requested to see patients in hospital to assist with getting you back on your feet.

During hospitalizations, after surgery or in ICU, our priority is always to make sure your lungs are and stay in a good condition.

If you happen to be ventilated, we assist with chest Physiotherapy to clear your lungs, as you are unable to.
We also encourage and teach breathing exercises to re expand your lungs and help you get off the ventilator and breathing on your own again.

We also assist with muscle strengthening
And rehab exercises to help you regain your strength and get you moving asap and if needed teach walking again.

We also prescribe assistive devices such as crutches and walking frames to assist with walking.

We see many different conditions and patients in hospital from babies, mums who have just given birth, orthopaedics, medical conditions, post cardiac or general surgery and adult icu and much more.

We look forward to assisting you on your road to recovery.

This is a very common question we as physiotherapists get asked regularly.

So let us get straight to it.

Ice is a great choice for the first 48-72 hours after an injury because it helps reduce swelling, which causes pain.

Cold treatment reduces inflammation by decreasing blood flow to the area and therefore assists with swelling and healing.

Heat, on the other hand, helps soothe stiff joints and relax muscles.
Heat treatment promotes blood flow and helps muscles relax. It helps a lot for chronic pain.

However, neither option should be used for more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time.
As even ice can cause a burn. And please note heat = warm NOT boiling HOT.
Heating a bean bag for 3minutes max and even covering in a towel is more than enough, making it hotter will not increase the effectiveness and could cause a burn.
The same goes for a hot water bottle, warm water NOT boiling water does the trick.
