Another housing project… and the basics were never even in place.
A parliamentary oversight committee has come down hard on the Alabama Extension 10 housing project in Matlosana, calling out poor planning across all levels - provincial Human Settlements, district, and local municipality.
The issue? Houses went up… but the infrastructure didn’t. We’re talking blocked sewage systems, no electricity, and residents left sitting in fully built homes that don’t function as homes.
Committee chair Mxolisi Kaunda didn’t hold back, saying it’s unacceptable in a country that’s supposed to be moving toward integrated human settlements, not just putting up structures and hoping the rest follows later.
It gets worse.
This is a 1,600-house project… and the contractor hasn’t been on site since October 2025. No movement. No urgency. Just another stalled development while people wait.
The committee is now warning that if nothing changes, contracts may need to be terminated, and future projects should be split across multiple contractors to avoid this exact situation.
There’s also growing frustration on the ground. Communication between government and residents has broken down, and officials have now been told to meet with the community within two weeks and explain what’s actually happening.
For now, electricity is only expected to start rolling out in the second half of the year.
So yes - houses built. But no power. Failing sewage. And a contractor that disappeared months ago.
