MOVE THE BODY TO BUILD THE BRAIN

The Mind Moves Institute, founded in 2005 by Dr Melodie de Jager, helps parents and educators understand how a child’s movements build their brain. Learn simple, practical strategies—through massage and Mind Moves exercises—to support the fundamental needs of the brain and body during the critical years of childhood and adolescence.

We offer:
• 1:1 Consultations
• Workshops for groups, online or in-person
• Books delivered anywhere in South Africa

We talk about wanting creative, curious, confident thinkers, yet the way we teach young children often does the opposite.

Creativity and problem-solving don’t grow from worksheets, crafts, or measurable results. They grow from experimentation, flexibility, and play. When learning becomes about right and wrong, children stop taking risks. They stop wondering. They learn to please rather than to think.

The data is clear that play-based environments build stronger executive functioning, lower stress physiology, and higher intrinsic motivation over time. Creativity, one of the strongest predictors of future innovation, thrives when children are free to explore, revise, and make mistakes. When we overstructure early learning, we condition compliance instead of curiosity, and that carries forward.

The foundation of learning is not rote drills, memorization, or performance. It is process. Trial and error. Problem solving. Self-discovery. That is what wires the brain for flexible thinking, regulation, and long-term academic success.

If we want lifelong learners, we have to stop valuing products over process and start protecting the experiences that build resilient, adaptable minds.

💭 D**k jy dis net speel? D**k weer.
Wanneer jou kind:
🫧 Borrels jaag
🦘 Met twee voete oor boontjiesakke hop
✈️ “Vliegtuig” speel
👣 Oor ’n ry boontjiesakke stap (een voet op elkeen)
… gebeur daar BAIE meer as net pret.

By Moov To Move bou ons nie net sterk spiere nie.
Ons bou selfvertroue. 💛
Speel is ’n kind se werk — en beweging is die fondament van leer.

We tend to value what we can measure, and because play lacks clear-cut, quantifiable outcomes, it is often undervalued or dismissed as “just fun" or seen as a "break from learning."

In contrast, activities like filling out worksheets, reciting rote drills, or coloring within the lines give us tangible, trackable results—something adults can easily assess and make sense of.

This preference for measurable outcomes leads to a misplaced emphasis on rigid, one-dimensional learning experiences, even though research shows that deep, meaningful learning happens through play, particularly messy, unstructured play.

Play is where children lay the neurological foundation for complex thinking. Open-ended, sensory-rich experiences wire the brain for problem-solving, adaptability, and innovation—skills that standardized drills fail to cultivate.

When children engage in messy play, they are experimenting, hypothesizing, testing ideas, and making sense of the world in a way that is far more cognitively demanding than filling in blanks or memorizing symbols or isolated facts. The neural connections strengthened through play become the groundwork for future academic success, whereas repetitive, shallow drills do not stimulate or enhance higher-order thinking.

Not only do these rote activities fail to prepare children for deep learning, but they actively work against it. They promote passive learning, diminish curiosity, and stifle creativity—elements essential for true intellectual growth.

When we prioritize what is easily measured over what is deeply meaningful, we end up favoring the illusion of learning rather than the processes that actually build a strong, capable mind.

🫧 This is why bubbles aren’t “just play”…
When your child runs around catching bubbles, it looks like simple fun.
But underneath? Big development is happening.

That running and jumping?
🔷 Builds core strength and balance — needed to sit upright and focus for longer in class.

Those little eyes tracking the bubble?
🔶 That’s the same eye movement needed to read a sentence without losing their place.

That careful hand trying to pop it at just the right moment?
🔷 That’s preparation for pencil control, neat handwriting, and less hand fatigue.

Even waiting for the “right moment” to catch it?
🔶 That’s impulse control and concentration — essential for maths, reading, and classroom learning.

Play builds brains.
Movement builds learning.
Fun builds confidence.

So next time you blow bubbles…
Remember: you’re actually building reading, writing, maths, and focus — one little pop at a time. 🫧✨
