UPDATE ON HVAC SYSTEM AND THEATRES AT GREY’S HOSPITAL
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health wishes to provide a positive update regarding the HVAC system and theatre operations at Grey’s Hospital, following recent public statements regarding the functionality of the theatres.
We begin by addressing and correcting misinformation that has been in circulation. It is categorically untrue that the theatres at Grey’s Hospital have been non-functional for the past five years.
Like any complex medical facility, the theatres have from time to time experienced technical glitches; a normal occurrence in such environments.
A dedicated service provider has always been on standby to resolve issues promptly, and at no point over the past five years have the theatres been shut down.
The recent challenge was specifically related to aging chillers, which have reached the end of their serviceable lifespan.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
1. IMMEDIATE REPAIRS COMPLETED
The contracted service provider was on site last week and successfully serviced the chillers. We are pleased to confirm that all nine theatres are now fully operational and in good working order.
2. CONTINUED SUPPORT MECHANISMS
To ensure sustained functionality, the service provider remains on standby to attend to any technical matters without delay. In addition, the Department is working closely with Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital to manage and clear any procedural backlog before the end of next week.
3. LONG-TERM SOLUTION ON TRACK
The procurement and installation process for new chillers is in its final stages. This remains a critical priority and will provide a permanent, reliable solution for the hospital’s infrastructure.
APPEAL TO THE PUBLIC AND STAKEHOLDERS:
We appeal to all stakeholders to refrain from sharing unverified information, which risks creating unnecessary public alarm. The Department remains committed to transparent communication.
All affected patients and clients will be contacted directly regarding the way forward. Patient safety and the continuity of care remain our absolute priority.
We thank the public for their patience and support as we work decisively to ensure both the immediate stability and long-term renewal of our hospital systems.
Ends.
