💩Baby p**p colour explained💩
Before kids, you would find it weird to discuss p**p, but when you become a parent, it’s the highlight of the conversation between parents.
Sometimes the baby's p**p colour can distress parents. Let’s look at different p**p colours and the possible reasons for it.
💩What does normal p**p look like?💩
🤱🏻Breastfed babies - yellow, seedy and runny.
🍼Formula fed babies - darker yellow/brown and thicker
💩What are the p**p rainbow colours?💩
🟨Mustard yellow🟨
This is the normal colour for a breastfed baby’s p**p.
🔸Orange🔸
When your baby has started solids, their p**p can change to orange due to foods like pumpkin, butternut or carrots.
‼️Red‼️
Red p**p is never good.
If there are tiny flecks of red, it might be due to constipation, as little tears form in the re**um or a**s with drops of blood from straining. This blood will be bright red.
Some blood in the stool might be from the mom’s cracked, bleeding ni***es. This blood will be darker.
Stool that looks like red currant jelly is a sign of intussusception, the inversion of one portion of the intestine within another. This is a medical emergency.
Other causes of blood in the stool may be infection or allergy, and should always be seen by a doctor.
Red foods like beetroot can also cause red stools
⚫️Black⚫️
In the first few days of a baby’s life, black stools are called Meconium, which is normal. If the stools are still black after day 3, there might be some feeding issues.
Iron in supplements can also turn
stools black.
If the baby isn’t on iron supplements, black stools can be a sign of bleeding in the intestines and should be seen by a doctor.
🟫Brown🟫
A normal p**p colour when on solids.
◽️Grey◽️
This might be due to solid foods.
If it persists, see a doctor, it could be due to liver or gallbladder problems.
⚪️White⚪️
If the stools are chalky white, see a doctor, it could be due to liver problems.
🩲Dark green🩲
Usually due to the iron in formula or if on iron supplements.
🐎Greenish brown🐎
This can be normal, especially for formula-fed babies.
May signal infection
🟢Bright green🟢
If stools are frothy and bright green in breastfed babies, it may be due to too much foremilk. Finish feeding on one breast until completely drained before swopping over to the other side.
