That bright red patch on the white of your eye looks dramatic but is usually harmless. It happens when a tiny blood vessel under the conjunctiva breaks. It doesn’t hurt, doesn’t affect your vision and normally clears within two weeks.

When should you worry?
– If it lasts longer than two weeks
– If there’s pain or blurry vision
– If there’s blood in the iris

Common causes include forceful sneezing, coughing, vomiting, rubbing the eyes, contact lenses and sometimes high blood pressure or blood thinners.

Use artificial tears for discomfort and avoid rubbing the eye roughly.

If you’re unsure, book an eye exam, we’ll quickly help you check that everything is okay.
