A positive sense of self is foundational for resilience and emotional wellness. A child with a strong
sense of self feels self-secure, self-accepting and is able to practice self-control, engage in selfdirection and self-determined decision-making, take responsibility for themselves and their actions,
practice self-reliance, and cope in times of stress or disturbance. This is because they are aware that
they are separate from their environment and so don’t need to receive constant external validation.

Sense of self is our understanding of who we are – our uniqueness – apart from the external world. According to Humphreys (2002, 125) there are six main aspects of a child’s sense of self, namely - their physical, emotional, behavioral, intellectual, social and creative sense of self. A child may have a more positive sense of self in one area, and a more negative sense of self in another.

When working with children, there are different ways that we can assist a child in developing a more positive sense of self overall. Would a talk about some of these skills and tools be helpful?
