A Reflection on Recovery: Rewriting the Stories We Tell

There’s a quiet violence in the way society speaks about people in recovery.

Words like lost, broken, hopeless get whispered behind closed doors or etched into headlines, reducing entire lives into cautionary tales.

And yet — seldom, I sit with people who have been branded by these narratives, and I witness something extraordinary:
They begin to re-author their lives.

In narrative therapy, we listen beyond the label.
We ask — who were you before the world called you lost?
What strengths helped you survive when the lights went out?
Whose voice do you want to hear in your story now?

I watch as these clients find threads of resilience, moments of tenderness, flashes of strength.
We thicken the plot.
We find subplots of courage, chapters of love, pages stained with survival.

They are not broken.
They are not their addiction.
They are storytellers in the truest sense — rewriting pain into purpose, shame into self-compassion.

And as their stories unfold, so does a quiet revolution:
A reclamation of dignity.
A resistance to erasure.
A reminder that no one is ever just one story.

To those in recovery:
You are not a label.
You are an author.
Your story is still being written — and it is worth reading, deeply.
