28 October - 3 November is Stroke Awareness Week!!

A Stroke can be best described as a "Brain attack"! It occurs when the blood supply to the brain is disrupted and results in an Oxygen need (starvation) that leads to brain damage and loss of function. A stroke can also be caused by a Haemorrhage when a burst vessel causes blood leaking into the brain.

What is expected after a Stroke?
• Loss in Balance and finer motor control (Gait)
• Partial Paralysis
• Impaired Speech, Comprehension and Memory loss

The type and severity of disability is dependent on the part of the brain affected as well as the length of time the blood supply has been stopped.

An efficient way of identifying a stroke is to apply the acronym "F.A.S.T.:
F - FACE (Droopy with a smile?)
A - ARMS (Raising arms at the same level?)
S - SPEECH (Slurry speech?)
T - TIME (Time recorder of above symptoms and call for help)

1 out of 4 adults over the age of 25 years will have a stroke in their lifetime according to WSO (Word Stroke Organization).

Stroke Rehabilitation will be physical activities that includes:
• Motor-skill exercise
• Mobility training
• Constraint-induced Therapy
• Range-of-Motion Therapy
• Functional Stimulation

Rehabilitation after a Stroke is crucial, researchers found that people who participate in a focused stroke rehabilitation program perform better than most people who don't have stroke rehabilitation.
