Of course, it’s easy to blame our parents for what they did or didn’t do. But the real issue is the lack of emotional literacy in our culture. We don’t teach parents how to respond to children’s feelings and emotions with empathy and compassion. We also don’t teach it in our kindergartens; we don’t teach it in our schools. We still value IQ far more than we value EQ.

When we witness the suffering of others, it can weigh heavily on our emotions, leaving us feeling powerless, anxious, and even guilty. This emotional burden, is known as empathic distress.
Extended periods of empathic distress and uncertainty can leave us feeling paralyzed and overwhelmed internally. In an attempt to restore order and predictability, our brains may try to exert control over aspects of our lives that are ultimately out of our control. Recognizing that we cannot alter another person's viewpoint is vital for our mental well-being and our relationships with others.
