🩺 Why Knowing Your Hepatitis Status Matters in Dialysis 🩺

If you’re on dialysis, knowing your hepatitis status is more than just a box to tick — it’s a vital part of staying healthy and protecting others. Hepatitis B and C can spread more easily in healthcare settings, especially where blood is involved. Early detection helps us manage your care safely and effectively.

💉 That’s why we strongly encourage vaccination against Hepatitis B. It’s a powerful way to protect yourself, your fellow patients, and our team.

Knowledge = Protection.
Vaccination = Prevention.

🥣 Hidden Fluids in Winter Foods
Winter comfort foods like soup, stews, porridge, and hot cereal are soothing, but full of fluid!
For dialysis patients, these can add up fast.

💡 Try this:
✅ Eat thicker soups/stews with a fork
✅ Measure your portions carefully
✅ Swap for hearty, dry options like roasted veggies or grilled protein

Warm meals don’t have to mean fluid overload.

🧥Winter Reminder: Take Off Heavy Clothing Before Weigh-In!
🧊 Cold mornings = big jackets, boots, scarves… and extra weight on the scale.
Accurate pre-dialysis weight is crucial for determining how much fluid to remove.

📉 Wearing heavy clothes can lead to:
⚠️ Overestimation of fluid gain
⚠️ Feeling dizzy or weak after dialysis
⚠️ Incorrect dry weight assessments

✅ Please remember to:
🧥 Remove jackets, scarves, boots, and bulky items before stepping on the scale
🧦 Wear layers that are easy to remove
👟 Use indoor shoes if needed

Every gram matters when it comes to your comfort and safety. Let’s stay accurate this winter!

☕ Cold Weather = More Hot Drinks? Watch Your Fluid Intake!

❄️ When it’s cold, it’s easy to reach for extra cups of tea, coffee, or soup to stay warm. But for dialysis patients, fluid limits still matter – even in winter.

🛑 Too much fluid can lead to:
High blood pressure
Swelling
Shortness of breath
Extra strain on your heart

🔥 Tips to manage hot drink cravings:
✅ Use a small mug instead of a big cup
✅ Choose strong herbal teas – more flavour, less volume
✅ Sip slowly and enjoy the warmth
✅ Try warming your hands with a heat pack or warm blanket instead

Staying warm doesn’t have to mean overdoing fluids. Keep cozy and in control.

🥦 Dialysis-Friendly Recipe of the Week: Low-Potassium Veggie Stir Fry

Perfect for:
Lunch, light dinner, or as a side dish
Servings: 2–3
Time: 20 minutes

🛒 Ingredients:
• 1 cup green cabbage, chopped
• ½ cup red bell pepper, thinly sliced
• ½ cup yellow bell pepper, thinly sliced
• ¼ cup onion, thinly sliced
• 1 tsp fresh garlic, minced
• 1 Tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
• 1 tsp olive oil
• Pinch of black pepper or lemon juice (optional for extra flavour)
• Optional: a sprinkle of sesame seeds (just a pinch—avoid too much phosphorus)

👩‍🍳 Directions:
1. Pre-boil the veggies (optional but helpful):
To lower potassium levels further, you can parboil the cabbage and bell peppers in a pot of water for 3–5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
2. Heat the oil:
In a non-stick pan or wok, heat 1 tsp olive oil over medium heat.
3. Sauté garlic and onions:
Add garlic and onion to the pan and sauté until fragrant (about 2 minutes).
4. Add the vegetables:
Add the cabbage and bell peppers. Stir-fry for 5–7 minutes until tender but still a little crisp.
5. Add flavour:
Drizzle with low-sodium soy sauce and mix well. Optional: add a splash of lemon juice or a pinch of black pepper.
6. Serve and enjoy!
Serve warm, on its own or with a small portion of white rice.

✅ Nutrition Tips:
• Bell peppers and cabbage have less potassium than veggies like spinach or tomatoes.
• Using low-sodium soy sauce helps control sodium levels, important for blood pressure and fluid retention.
• Avoid adding salt or high-potassium sauces (like tomato sauce).
