Many people believe they need to hit rock bottom before seeking support.

But the truth is that you don't have to lose everything before deciding something needs to change.

Sometimes the bravest decision is reaching out before things get worse.

Recovery doesn't start at rock bottom

It starts with honesty. And the courage to take the first steps to meaningful help.

What’s the one thing people most misunderstand about rehab?

In our experience - it’s not just about the substance — it’s about what sits beneath it.

Addiction is often a response to deeper underlying causes, and real recovery begins when we understand the “why,” not just the “what.”

Once the root cause is understood, meaningful change becomes possible.

In this podcast, our founder Giles Fourie speaks with Cullan Mais about what true rehabilitation really involves.

Recovery is not just about what you stop doing. Whether it’s engaging in substance use or a particular behaviour.

It's about what you start building.

Structure. Routine. Accountability. Trust within yourself.

Because lasting recovery isn't created in one moment of motivation or a single choice to improve your life or well-being.

It's created through the small decisions and choices you make every day.

If you are feeling stuck and need support to help you move forward, contact White River Recovery today.

Teen alcohol misuse is not always obvious. It rarely starts with dramatic changes.

A teenager who becomes more secretive. Sudden shifts in friendships. Pulling away from family. Mood swings. Falling grades. Avoiding conversations about where they’ve been...

Yes, sometimes it’s experimentation. Sometimes it’s stress, social pressure, anxiety, low confidence, or trying to fit in.

But early alcohol use matters because the teenage brain is still developing, particularly the areas linked to impulse control, emotional regulation, and decision-making.

A few signs parents and caregivers should watch for:

• Increased secrecy or withdrawal
• New friendship groups and changes in behaviour
• Irritability, anxiety, or low mood
• Declining motivation at school
• Changes in sleep or self-care
• Defensiveness around social plans

If you’re worried, try curiosity before confrontation.

Questions like “How have things been lately?” or “Is anything feeling difficult right now?” often open more doors than accusations.

We recently explored this topic in more depth, including warning signs, underlying causes, and ways parents can respond supportively.

Not every recovery breakthrough happens through words.

Sometimes it happens quietly, with a paintbrush in hand, in a space where there’s no pressure to explain everything perfectly.

Creative therapies like painting can help people slow down, process emotions differently, and reconnect with parts of themselves that may have been buried beneath stress, trauma, or addiction.

Healing can look many different ways. 🎨

Mandrax isn’t talked about as openly as alcohol or cannabis, but that doesn’t make it any less dangerous.

It’s a sedative that slows the central nervous system. At first, it can feel like relief. Your body relaxes, your thoughts quieten, and things feel manageable for a while. But that’s where it gets complicated.

Because the same effect that makes it appealing is what makes it risky.

Over time, the brain starts to rely on it. What begins as occasional use can shift into something more frequent, especially if it becomes your way of coping with stress, anxiety, or emotional discomfort.

Some of the risks people don’t always realise:
- It affects breathing and heart rate, especially in higher doses or when mixed with alcohol
- Tolerance builds quickly, meaning you need more to feel the same effect
- Withdrawal can bring anxiety, restlessness, and sleep issues
- Memory loss and impaired judgment are common
- Street versions are often mixed with unknown substances, making effects unpredictable

What makes Mandrax particularly difficult is how quiet it can look from the outside. Someone might seem calm or withdrawn, while internally their system is under serious strain.

And like many substances, it’s rarely just about the drug itself. It’s also about what it’s helping someone avoid, manage, or escape.
