Mthimkhulu Centre and Housing for the Aged
Mthimkhulu was named in memory of social worker/community developer Faith Grootboom who died after 7 years of service while still employed by the Society. Mthimkhulu provides the following services to older persons:
Rental Accommodation at Mthimkhulu Assisted Living
Mthimkhulu Assisted Living caters for residents needing a certain amount of help with basic chores, food preparation, washing etc. The first residents moved in during September 2007. Residents share a living room, bathroom and kitchen and resident is only subsidized in this form of accommodation if approved by Department of Social Development. Mthimkhulu Senior Service Centre
Initially, Luncheon Clubs were registered as satellites of the Oasis Seniors Centre. Mthimkhulu Centre and Housing for the Aged houses a fully functional senior service centre with a number of facilities such as a health clinic, communal hall, library, convenience shop, braai area, transport services, laundromat and postal services. All members of the Mthimkhulu Centre enjoy the activities and services of the Mthimkhulu Service Centre and the Mthimkhulu Health Clinic:
Sing-a-Iong, passive exercises, motivational talks by the social worker, health talks by a nurse, Braai "Pap en Sous“ socials at the lapa, arts and crafts, knitting group, jumble sales. Twice weekly shuttle bus to town. Organized day trips to a variety of exciting places. Active Ageing Program in Place
Skills Training - AET literacy programmes. Health Care Services
The Mthimkhulu Health Clinic provides registered nursing staff who assist with the medical needs or residents and members from the community at the Health Clinic. Monitoring of blood pressure and blood sugar is essential. Tuesdays is foot care day, a firm favourite. Clinic sisters visit residents that are infirm and do aftercare for residents recovering from illness or surgery. Social Work Support Services
The social worker is partially responsible for the running of the Senior Service Centre particularly for overseeing the activities programme. The social worker supports individuals and their families through difficult times and ensure that vulnerable people are safeguarded from harm. Their role is to help improve outcomes in people's lives. They maintain professional relationships and act as guides and advocates. They assist older persons with the admission to Mthimkhulu Assisted Living
Daily meals
The 2 cooks prepare the morning teas and lunches for the centre members. Transport
Transport for residents to and from town. One of the biggest problems in running a successful centre particularly to cater for the underprivileged is the provision of transport. Safety And Security
High palisade walls with electrified fencing 24 hour controlled entrance security, Mag Touch and frequent patrolling of the facility, 24 hour armed response security, emergency phones within every unit, full evacuation plan, emergency communication systems .
