How does uncontrolled Diabetes effect gut health:
Uncontrolled Diabetes can in return influence gut health. One of the consequences of uncontrolled Diabetes, is called Gastropareses. This is a condition where the nerves controlling the stomach muscle movement, has been damaged so much (by the high blood sugar level) that normal stomach emptying is not possible any more. This leads to symptoms including nausea, vomiting, low appetite, feeling full after eating small amounts of food, abdominal pain, and heartburn. Therefore, if you already have Diabetes, your first step towards a healthier gut, is to have good blood glucose control.

How gut health is related to Diabetes onset:
1. Recent studies have shown connections between certain good gut bacteria and increased Insulin sensitivity. In short, this means that Insulin will work more effectively if you have a healthier gut. As Insulin is the main hormone involved in regulating blood glucose levels, a healthy gut reduces your chances of developing Diabetes.
2. When the gut is not healthy, it often leads to higher levels of inflammation in the whole body. Recent research suggests that inflammation inside the body plays a role in the development of type 2 diabetes.
3. A diet that supports good gut health is generally higher in fibre and lower in refined carbohydrates and saturated fats. People following these guidelines will be able to maintain a healthier weight much easier than those people with a higher fat and sugar intake. It is well known that obesity increases the risk of Insulin resistance and Diabetes. Therefore, following a diet and lifestyle that support good gut health will lower the risk of developing Diabetes.

I have been working in private practice for more than 20 years. After Covid, I realised how powerful our immune system is and how big part a healthy gut plays in our overall health. I needed to know more and equipped myself by doing several accredited courses in Gut Health, IBS and the gut Microbiome. I soon realised that this topic goes much wider and a healthier gut not only leads to a stronger immune system, but also better heart health, mental health, less allergies, lower inflammation in the whole body which in turns leads to lower incidence of inflammatory disorders such as Arthritis and Inflammatory Bowel disease to name a few. I also realized that gut health is not often casually talked about and that many people suffer-in-silence from uncomfortable and embarrassing symptoms. Allow me to support you in you journey towards a healthier gut. Face-to-face-consultations at my practice in Worcester is always preferable, but long-distance consultations can also be arranged.

Diarrhoea: Having 4 or more watery, unformed stools per day, with or without pain, classifies as having diarrhoea. If pain is present and loose stools persist for more than 3 months, it might be IBS-D. Both need to be treated medically as well as by adapting the diet. Long term diarrhoea, lead to the inability to absorb nutrients and water from the stool, causing dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and serious nutritional deficiencies. If you have diarrhoea, you do not have a healthy gut.

Pain: You are not supposed to experience any pain after eating or while going to the toilet. Pain can have many causes, ranging from being bloated (excessive gas), hard stools, spasms or even serious infections. Patients with diagnosed IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) may have 'Visceral hypersensitivity" which means that they experience pain due to over-stretching of the gut, more intensely. If you experience abdominal pain on a regular basis, chances are that your gut is not very healthy. , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

When it comes to bowel habits, everybody's 'normal' is different. If you have anything up to 3 stools per day or 3 stools per week, that could be considered as being 'normal'. Having less than three stools per week, of which at least 25% is lumpy or hard, would be considered as being constipated. Short term changes in frequency of stools are normal, especially if eating and drinking habits or other lifestyle changes occurred in the short term, for example over a weekend or being ill. Leaving constipation to go on for too long, can lead to f***l impaction- a condition where the build-up of stool in the colon, makes it impossible to pass stool naturally. Harsh medication is then needed to get the bowel moving again. But even if f***l impaction does not occur, every time you get constipated, the health of your gut is being challenged and normal movement (peristalsis) is inhibited. All the food you eat stays in the colon for longer than what is necessary, disturbing the microbiome, causing a build-up of gas and toxins. If you get constipated on a regular basis, you do not have a healthy gut. , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Normal digestion result in gas being formed in the gut. It is normal. We all have it! OVER-production of gas is a problem! It can cause a lot of discomfort and pain, especially if the gas cannot escape the digestive tract (upwards of downwards ;-). This overproduction of gas can have many causes of which food intolerances are one. Another cause is called Dysbiosis when the balance between the good and bad bacteria in the gut is off. If you experience excessive gas, chances are that your gut is not very healthy. , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Science is currently exploding with new studies published on a regular basis, connecting good gut health to areas of the body outside of the gut. These areas include the brain, inflammation levels, the immune system, the skin, colon, heart health, oral health, the liver as well as specific hormones. If you take good care of your gut, your general health and wellbeing in all these areas can improve significantly as shown in recent studies. Follow this page for more information on this exiting topic.
